A lively & exciting release from Ms Uehara November 13, 2008 Beyond Standard
Japanese born keyboardist/pianist Hiromi Uehara and her group Sonicbloom release an album of exciting jazz titled Beyond Standard.
After the brief intro of the track "Softly As In Morning Sunshine" you are then catapulted into the full 7 minutes of an uptempo and lively track.
"Clair De Lune" is a nice breezy track with some fine guitar playing which sits well with Ms Uehara's piano playing. The classic jazz standard "Caravan" is a given a fast paced twist again with Hiromi's exciting piano skills. "Ue Wo Muite Arukio" has a nice jazz-funk feel to it.
Another classic included is the song "My Favourite Things". Hiromi's playing is at the forefront but allows the rest of the trio to put their fine musicianship on this cover. "Led Boots" and "XYG" bring a nice mix of jazz, funk & rock to the album. The final track on the CD, "I've Got Rhythm" has Hiromi displaying her exciting and fast paced piano playing style.
With 8 of the 9 tracks ranging between 6 to 8 minutes Hiromi and her trio don't leave you short-changed! This is an excellent, enjoyable and lively jazz release. Highly recommended.
Outstanding jazz talent with excellent production May 20, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I got this album, Beyond standard, after hearing Hitomi play live. She is a tremendously energetic performer and whilst it is true the visual side of her performance is lost from the CD the playfulness, creativity and sheer talent of the whole band, but Hitomi in particular, shine through. The ability to switch tempo, beat, style, and dynamics is something that any "jazz head" will appreciate. Just listen to I've got Rhythm to hear a plethora of ideas that showcase this extraordinary talent. Naming this album Beyond Standard is an injustice to the talent on offer, something like Beyond Exceptional would be much more fitting. You owe it to yourself to add this to your collection.
