Amazon.co.uk Review Like its predecessors, Kenny G's Breathless is a collection of tuneful, easy-listening instrumentals baited with a couple of pop-soul vocal numbers. This album is built on Kenny G's most obvious strengths: his knack for writing hummable pop hooks and his ability to play those radio-friendly melodies in a breathy, fluid style that invites the listener to lie back and relax. When it comes to background music that's slightly catchier and peppier than most new age music, Kenny G is a master of his genre. The titles of Kenny G's instrumentals on are a good clue to his approach: "Sentimental", "The Joy of Life", "Forever in Love" and "The Wedding Song". Sentimental, in the sense of simplifying life to a set of comfortable feelings, is a good adjective for Kenny G's music, for even his wordless instrumentals push the listener's warm glow buttons while ignoring anything more complicated. The saxophonist himself programmed many of the drum, bass and keyboard parts on Breathless, contributing to the sense that everything's running on autopilot. --Geoffrey Himes

The soundtrack to a permanent vegetative state. July 4, 2008 Enjoy taking the lift? Love a good long wait on hold? Find your toes tapping to the radio in the doctor's waiting room? Feel the urge to dance in the Cleaning Products and Binliners aisle in Morrisons? Then you'll love the insipid, soulless faux-jazz muzak of Kenny G.
Thinking about buying this (or any other) Kenny G record? I'll save you the effort; everything he's produced consists of irritatingly sharp pentatonic runs up and down, interrupted occasionally by a wavering, poorly-controlled long note followed by one of his half a dozen twiddly licks. Repeat until you feel the urge to vomit up your own lungs. This is a record of soul crushing dreariness, a reminder of just how suffocatingly vacuous some human beings are. 'Music' of this calibre would be disappointing from a young player still finding their direction, but Mr Gorelick has been playing for well over thirty years and seems to have utterly failed to develop as an artist. Amazon's Bargain Jazz section has a whole host of classic albums for less than a fiver that are everything 'Breathless' isn't - insightful, enriching, innovative, vital, spiritually nourishing and worthy of your time and money.
I prefer my jazz with substance June 1, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't know how Kenny G gets classified as Jazz, but as far as mindless background music goes, this is not too horrible.
Breathless - Kenny G's best February 25, 2004 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
It is easily Kenny G's best album to date. Each track is a masterpiece and listeners will find a 'mood' for every track..Its got a bit of everything....ENERGY (The Joy of Life, GBop) VOCALS (By the Time This Night Is Over, Even If My Heart Would Break) LOVE (Forever in Love, Wedding Song) SENTIMENTAL (Sentimental, Alone, End of the Night) and much much more. Though most of the tracks are from his older albums, Kenny G has taken care to pick and choose the best tracks to fit into Breathless. This is truly a masterpiece. A MUST MUST BUY.... :-) The more I listen to it, the more I love it...
MELLIFLUENTLY MELLOW... February 19, 2003 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful CD, with music ranging in tone from the poignantly bittersweet to the sweetly joyful. The soothing refrains of Kenny G's sax makes for a very mellow, relaxing listening experience. If you love beautiful music, then this is a must have CD. For those critics who say that this is not jazz, I would agree with you. It does not mean that it is not worthy. Open up your heart to its beauty, and stop being so pompous and hung up on labels. This is a CD well worth listening to.
