2 out of 5 stars Smooth and cheesy does it. Keep a bucket to hand.   June 19, 2008

If you love smooth jazz with all danger and surprise removed then you might go for this. If you are hoping to find Benson at the top of his game as a serious guitarist then give it a wide birth. Ditto with all other musicians here.

This CD is full of top-drawer talent but the problem is that they are all so very restrained and rehearsed and the result is low fat sweet cheese. YUK!

Al hardly sings a song on it and mostly just scats rhythmic ideas that sometimes sound like an old man running for a bus. Definitely out-sung by Benson here.

George is always great on a guitar, but again this is the super smooth George and lacks any real soul and conviction. (wish I could play like him though).

Just when I was nodding off, along comes Paul McCartney (I'm not a fan) and wakes the whole session up on the final track. Vinnie is clearly delighted at his arrival and actually manages to get away with using a couple of his toms without the bosses noticing.

Marcus Miller is probably the only cat that got away with playing what he wants on his own track.

I'll be taking my copy down to the local charity shop.

5 out of 5 stars Solid jazz set   September 30, 2007

this album has Jill Scott on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't need to know anymore to buy it.
Some great re-visits to old Benson and Jarreau numbers mixed with a few standards.Sadly newer jazz fans may not understand that scatting has been an improvised vocal expression of music since the days of Ella and has been Jarreau's 'trademark' for all his (long and established!) career.
Great stuff AND Jill.A must for fans old and new!

5 out of 5 stars Georgie B is back on top   January 28, 2007

Georgie B has always been one of the greatest live performers in the history on jazz music - I recommend thoroughly George Benson Live - recorded at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast quite stunning, 5 ****** plus
Some of his recent studio work, espec. the last album, has varied in
quality. Givin' It up mark a welcome return to form, with another jazz legend Al Jarreau, definitely not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Masters together   January 13, 2007

A dream come true. The two masters of modern jazz, Al Jarreau and George Benson working together. This album naturally features the amazing vocals of Al Jarreau and the silky guitar of George Benson. The combination is just terrific. Trusted tracks like Mornin, God Bless the Child, Summer Breeze are given the full treatment. At the end of the album, Bring it on home to me with Paul McCartney - wow. It must have been something to have been in that studio!
This album is a MUST for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dig It   November 8, 2006

The combination of Al Jarreau and George Benson works extremely well with a varied choice of material and superb production.
If you are a fan of either of these great artistes, this is is an essential purchase.
One highlight is a vocal version of Miles Davis' Tutu and there are guest vocals from Patti Austin( Let It Rain) and Jill Scott (God Bless The Child) as well as Paul McCartney on a rousing gospelish version of Bring It On Home To Me".
Superb musicianship and great grooves. Never bland and always on the mark. Thoroughly recommended.
