Amazon.co.uk Review Vince Benedetti, the co-leader of Heartdrops, was American-born but has lived in Switzerland since 1964. He has worked with such luminaries as Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, besides leading his own ensembles. He discovered Diana Krall singing in a hotel bar in his adopted homeland in 1988. She joined his band for a European tour and this album was recorded in 1990. It never found release at the time, but Krall's subsequent success has brought it to light. Seven originals here make it clear why composer, pianist and trombonist Benedetti felt he'd found an ideal voice for his songs. Accompanied by Benedetti, guitarist Martien Oster, bassist Christoph Sprenger and drummer Alberto Canonico, Krall sails through them with the swooping vigour and confidence one associates with timeless standards. Two numbers are offered in shorter alternative takes to encourage radio airplay. From saucy swagger to lilting balladry, this is a perfectly matched set of players and material. It's also an early look at a singer whose big debut didn't occur until three years later. --David Greenberger, Amazon.com

Fantastically swinging and harmonically rewarding... October 18, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This really was quite a find - Diana Krall's first album, and I think actually one of her finest ever offerings. A very upbeat, swinging album, with fantastic melodies throughout, great lyrics, and a lot of heart, Heartdrops has suprised me by becoming one of the few CD's in my collection I can turn to practically anytime and be riveted. It also features something of a hardbop legend, Vince Benedetti, the veteran pianist, and on this album, trombonist, who I happened to remember for his brilliant piano playing on Hank Mobley's album 'The Flip' (he also played with Dizzy Gillespie) - his playing is a pure joy on this album, with his beautifully mellow tone, and very harmonically interesting note choices. And the rest of the band are also excellent!
Before she was famous March 30, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a hidden gem of an album, showing la Krall as already a mature jazz trouper fitting seemlessly in with an experienced and swinging combo. Excellent soloing all round. Not simply a curiousity, but an outstanding album in its own right, you will not be disappointed by this early glimpse of this great jazz artiste and the excellent team who talent-spotted her.
