Earfood - A tasty snack but not quite a main course June 28, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just like his "Nothing serious" album Hargrove delivers another enjoyable slice of straight ahead jazz but nothing more.Hargrove as we know,is one of the world's premier trumpet players and that's probably why i'm being a little critical of this album - purely because of the name on the front cover. Now in his late thirties,Roy is still searching for the album that will really define him for the great musician that he is.The music,of course, is nicely played but other than altoist Justin Robinson, everyone plays it desperately safe in an attempt to please all and offend nobody. This is all well and good but with other up and coming musicians like Jeremy Pelt,Donny McCaslin,Chris Potter and Seamus Blake all forging ahead with their own identities Hargrove is becoming a predictable old hand. That aside there is much fine music to be had here and none better than "Mr clean" (from Freddie Hubbards straight life album) which has a nice lively funky feel to it with Robinson soloing adventurously."The stinger" is a nice lively track and "Starmaker" has a striking similarity to Herbie hancock's "Maiden Voyage" but a number of the tracks are too short and tame to stir the soul of hardened be-bop/post-bop fans. Some longer tracks with longer soloing space wouldn't have gone amiss here. A nice album, nicely played and nicely produced but Roy has so much more to give and i sure wish he'd give it.
