It's A Bit Like Marmite....You Love It Or You Hate It.... November 15, 2008 Rock Swings is the first of two albums by Paul Anka. The man who famously penned "My Way" covers some contempory songs "his way" in a swing/big band manner. If your a lover of differing cover versions of songs you love, then is is one for the eclectic collection. Do check out the second album Classic Songs: My Way and enjoy.
Silk purses from sows' ears March 25, 2008 Paul Anka as one of the founders of high school pop along with Buddy Holly does no more than what rock'n'roll singers of his era were doing ie reconstructing songs.Like the Marcels did with Blue Moon.Or even him with 40s standards from musicals Theres always going to be snobbery but few realise that Anka began his career on a black music label on 1955
An amazing idea August 6, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a fan of both the rock and jazz scenes, I couldn't help but buy this as soon as I heard the track "Smells like teen spirit" on Radio 2 the other day...
This is one of the best cover interpretations I have heard in a long time. Sure, the style does not suit ALL of the songs (and I am talking one or two) but the rest sound immaculate, almost as if they were written for swing. Personally, I could not want any more (apart from maybe a rock swings 2!)
a really unique album May 19, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is not an album I play often, I admit, but it's worth owning if only for the fun of startling and cheering up friends. Not all of the songs are effective in swing style, but watching someone's face trying to place familiar lyrics in Anka context is hilarious.
Well I never! October 31, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having heard one of the tracks on the radio I was intrigued to listen to a few more. I must say some of the reviews are a bit harsh and people have to expand their minds and think outside the box. I am young enough to know the originals although I didn't really like them, but not old enough to have checked Paul Anka the artist out. I think this album is a fantastic example of what you can do if you push the boundaries a little and play with a song, something great will happen. My faves are Wonderwall, I also loved True, classic in its day now giving the 'swing' treatment with style, and Smells Like Teen Spirit pure class; I am not a music critic, performing artist etc but I think the fact he even touched these songs is brave in itself. Taking songs out of one's comfort zone - wicked! I hope he brings out Rock Swings 2.
