I have always loved the records that Labelle put out in the 70's but inspite of their lone hit 'Lady marmalade' they somehow got lost in the shuffle. So much great soul music was being made in that mid-70's period that competition was tough! But those records of theirs: funk with 3 high voice at a ptich, screaming away, it had such a groove that gelled perfectly for me, but I can see not everyone might think so. But give NIGHTBIRDS a spin again: this was a powerhouse trio that deserved more. Obviously Patti Labelle called time out and went on to solo sucesss (and I have some of her late 70's and early 80's stuff) but some of that high volt energy seemed missing.
Therefore from that point of view at least, that there is another Labelle 'product' to hand, 30 years after their last one is a cause for celebration. And Vicki Wickham their manager from the earlier years is listed as executive producer on this one, so old ties were still being kept. And it is a relief to report that pretty much the whole album, despite the 'multiple producer syndrome' sounds like they just started from where they left off in 1978! Even the 'feat.Wyclef Jean' track is not too bad. Good to see Gamble & Huff on board for four of the 10 tracks (and incidentally, their 70's side project with Laura Nyro and Labelle's GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE, produced by Gamble & Huff, is one of the loveliest albums of that era) but the Lenny Kravitz produced track are fine too. The icing on the cake for me however has to be the last track, Cole Porter's 'Miss Otis Regrets', which was recorded in 1970, and procuded by Kit Lambert- and which for some reason they tacked on to the the end of an album recorded in 2008! and thank god they did! They could cover anything and put their stamp on it (and dont forget they covered The Who , and Gil Scott Heron in their heyday). A thoroughly good album that without trying to sound either modern or retro, feels right at home.
