This album is to some extent a 'vanity project', full of guest appearances and 'experiments', but it's all the better for that - it's impossible to categorise this music except to say that most of it is great. Compared to the rather sterile major-label 'fusion' releases of these days (see Scofield, Stern, Metheny), this is a real blast, and Mays and Geffen Records have to be applauded for their audacity.
Feet First sounds like an outtake from Donald Fagen's Nightfly album with the vocals taken off; August and Hangtime are superb ambient/jazz pieces featuring shimmering work from Bill Frisell and Peter Erskine; Before You Go is space-age muzak with a huge orchestral backing out of Claus Ogerman; Possible Straight is big-band jazz with some great drumming by Steve Jordan, and the title track is just bonkers and has to be heard to be believed. It takes in elements of prog rock, complete with backwards voices and odd-time signatures, modern classical music with its brooding orchestra and gorgeous oboe, and a Metheny Group-style cod-Latin workout with Mays's piano at its most Jarrett-like.
One thing's for sure - you won't be bored checking out this album. It also avoids the new-age sentimentality that Lyle's bandmate Pat is often prone to so I'd thoroughly recommend it.
Pretty good, but... August 6, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
By no means cutting edge but an album of good tunes. Could have benefitted from more risk taking. Metheny's sidekick writes some lyrical stuff and although very enjoyable is maybe too smooth. Guitarist Bill Frisell is on some tracks but given very little scope to add some much needed grit. Other names contributing are Peter Erskine and Steve Gadd on drums, Marc Johnson and Steve Rodby on bass and Bob Mintzer on sax and flute. The long, closing, 4-part Street Dreams is a bit less predictable with Mays soloing to good effect on piano. A lot of the Metheny/Mays output does suffer slightly from an over-produced, smoothness in my opinion. Catch them live, they are so much more exciting.
If all jazz CD's where like this I would buy one every week March 14, 2002 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the CD to buy after having bought the first Lyle Mays CD. After having listened to both I think that Lyle Mays is the true inspiration for the fabulous Pat Metheney group. All the best bits of all the Pat Metheney/Lyle Mays recordings seems to me to be inspired mostly by the genius of Lyle Mays, even though Pat Metheney is obviously very talented too. But it is the shear excitement and lovely melodies of Lyle Mays music which shines through and is so extraordinary and satisfying and extremely exciting. The tracks that display these characteristics the most are Feet First, Hangtime and the fabulous Before you Go. Whatever inspired these melodies can only be guessed at. The rest of the tracks are just well executed fusion jazz music that any jazz lover would be happy to buy.
