Phil Collins is regularly thrashed in the press for playing it safe and churning out predictable dependable music for yuppies. He was once accused of being "a rich superstar whose music only sounded good in a BMW." On A Hot Night in Paris, Collins again jumps into the shallow end of the pool and comes up playing Le Jazz Hot, with a 20-member band including a Count Basie arranger and some old-timers he borrowed from Buddy Rich's band to augment his regular players. To his credit, Collins worked out to a video designed for jazz drummers to get in shape for the project, but his muscular timekeeping lacks the color and subtleties of players born to the art form. Also, there is very little of what he does best: singing. The only vocals on this album are a few grunts and moans during an almost-note-perfect rendering of the Average White Band's funk classic, "Pick up the Pieces," which almost rescues the album from banality. Thrown in for recognition value are instrumental renditions of some of his better known solo chart-toppers, such as "Sussudio," "I Don't Care Anymore," and "Against All Odds." But more surprising, the former Genesis skinbeater threw in four numbers from the rock band's extensive songbook, including a swing version of the eccentric "Los Endos Suite." The only thing missing from this CD, recorded live in Paris and Montreux, is the clinking of cocktail glasses. --Jaan Uhelszki

You've got to admire Phil Collins for this project. It would have been easy to stick to the tried and trusted jazz / big band standards but bravely he's reworked some of the songs from his solo career and his time with Genesis.
This sounds like a big ask but overall Collins pulls this off. One of the highlights for me is the opener "Sussudio" but others such as "That's All", "Invisible Touch" and "I Don't Care Anymore" meander in a nice way to create a relaxing vibe. The only fly in ointment is "Against All Odds" sorry, but I couldn't help thinking of hotel foyers and lifts! . The last track, is a straightforward, but not unpleasant, big band version of the Genesis live classic Los Endos. However, by far the best, is a wonderfully invigorating 12 minute version of The Average White Band's "Pick Up The Pieces". If you don't buy this CD at least try to get a listen to this track, it's rip-roaring stuff !
I've no idea what jazz / big band purists think of this or for that matter Genesis/Phil Collins fans. I get the feeling that perhaps Collins doesn't care that much anyway. He's doing this because he can and he has always wanted to. What it does emphasize is the versatility of one of this country's top musicians who in recent years has been sadly and unfairly maligned by people with barely an ounce of his talent.

I quite like Mr Collins, and I quite like the sound of the Big Band, so getting this was a test - Starts brilliantly, with Susudio and then occationally falls away with some Kenny G sound alike in it, which quickly gets the flick in the car system!Well worth buying, but with me, it tends to be a swap out CD for a short blast rather than a long standing car fav. Pick up the pieces - world class and in need of severe volume to get best value!

When I first saw the Phil Collins Big Band CD I thought 'Phil Collins? Big Band' And did not expect the two to mix. I was certainly surprised when I played the CD to find some of the best Big Band I have heard in recent times. Phil, as we know from Genesis has written a lot of music himself and on this CD some of his classics are transferred effortlessly into the Big Band Sound. For example 'Sussudio' and 'Invisible Touch' show his versatility. Complete with classics from Miles Davis (Milestones) and The Average White Band (Pick Up The Pieces)and a very excitable French crowd - this live CD is a real treat for anyone who enjoy's the Big Band Sound. By the way, listen out for some seriously funky Alto Sax from Gerald Albright. Mmmmm Nice!
