Brilliant solo piano February 13, 2002

Why doesn't Uri Caine get more publicity? To judge from this recording of solo piano, he is - when he is in straight-ahead jazz mode rather than exploring the classical repertoire - one of the most brilliant, eclectic and yet individual performers around. All but two of the tracks on this album (one of which is a gospel-tinged version of Lennon and McCartney's 'Blackbird') are his own compositions, and they draw inspiration from a variety of classical, jazz and other sources. For me the marvel of Caine's playing was that he can manage to be so thoroughly steeped on the one hand in the traditions of jazz piano (without sounding simply academic: take the stride piano on 'Snort') whilst on the other sounding so individual and so modern. This is easily the best solo jazz piano recording I have heard for a long while.
