Amazon.co.uk Review Nina Simone has probably got one of the most recognisable voices in music. One, which can pick up a song and mould it into the meaning she wants it to have. This was especially true in the late 1960s when, influenced by Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, her interpretation of numbers such as the title track, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Ne Me Quitte Pas", reflected the black American's experience. As did the self-penned "Mississippi Goddam" and her cover of "Strange Fruit", with which she is the only one who can compare with Billie Holiday's. Elsewhere in this collection, she is more playful but just as stunning with George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun", the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" and "Ain't Got No (I Got Life)". Not to mention, the classic Simone numbers "My Baby Just Cares" and "Love Me Or Leave Me". The latter pair proving that in addition to having a superb voice she is also an emotive pianist. --Phil Brett

Warning: don't buy this CD for "My Baby Just Cares For Me" August 23, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very much agree with the previous reviewer. The version of "My Baby Just Cares For Me" on this CD is not the well-known, uplifting, bouncy version we all know and love, but an inferior version. Disappointing.
if you have a soul then this is for you January 11, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I first heard this album when I was about 18 and it blew me away until then I though this was just the music in my dad's record collection but how wrong was I . This really is the best music can offer you filling you with a range of heart shattering emotions that only Nina can express. If you are a Nina Simone fan then buy this album its well worth every penny in fact I still listen to it at least once a day.

I wont claim to be the biggest nina simone fan in the world, but this particular album has to be without a doubt fantastic. I have checked out probably a dozen or so cds (a couple compilation) and this has to be the best. I have been listening to this cd with some regularity for the past 6 years or so now and it still never fails to supply. Sunday mornings, rainy afternoons, drunken return home with the mates, a few songs even thrown on at a party or two. ("love me or leave me" will always be remembered for getting twelve people on the coffee table) From the shreiking of mississippi god-damn to the beauty of ne me quitte pas... you`ll be spending your money wisely on this gem. yeahwarren@hotmail.com
Classic Tracks, but not quite right! May 21, 2001 26 out of 29 found this review helpful
Having watched "The Assassin" movie starring Bridgit Fonda, which heavily features Nina Simone music, I went out and bought this CD. The first track "Feeling Good" makes the purchase price worthwhile by itself. It's a truely remarkable, spine-tingling song that should be your wake-up tune every morning, and will make you feel good about the day.Along with the classic tracks "I put a spell on You" and "Don't let me be misunderstood", is one I didn't recognise by name, "Sinner Man", but found I knew very well and liked from hearing on TV. So why only 4 stars. "My baby just cares for me" is probably the best known song Nina has recorded, and a favourite for many people. But the version included here has a sparse arrangement and sounds like a sleepy jazz trio, rather than the upbeat full sound of the version most people will recognise. This is a great CD, but if you buy it, you are going to have to buy another too to get the best version of this song
