Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Mississippi-born slide guitar specialist spent most of his childhood across the way in Louisiana, soaking up the Cajun and zydeco influences that have always been present in his recordings. Landreth's career ignited in the late 1970s, as sideman to Clifton Chenier, followed by a stint with Michael Doucet's Beausoleil. The latter fiddler appears as one of this album's host of guest players, which also includes another old employer, John Hiatt, as well as the omnipresent Bonnie Raitt. As expected, it's Landreth's sliding flash that presides over the self-penned tunes, his burning, skidding tootles and hot yowling licks repeatedly lifting each track into the red. Landreth's song writing often tends towards nondescript rock, but his narrative lyrics have substance, crying out for some harder melodic content. Joe Mouton's accordion and frottoir (rubboard) add authentic spice to "The U.S.S. Zydecoldsmobile", while "Broken-Hearted Road" travels from sparse slugging to smoking frenzy. Axe fiends can rejoice in the instrumental "Spider-Gris" and "Z. Rider", then the closing "Angeline" and "Deep South" bring on a soul horn section, adding yet another flavour to this Southern stew. --Martin Longley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A flawless, faultless and beautiful album   January 18, 2004

I wondered to myself "How can Sonny Landreth possibly equal the resounding success of South of I-10?" but I needn't have worried. Levee Town consolidates his status as the supreme slide guitarist working today but also builds on and develops his quite considerable songwriting abilities. Many have spoken of the weakness of his vocals but his voice perfectly compliments the instrumental prowess and indeed, sets it off nicely.

The tracks are beautifully worked and none more so than album highlights such as Deep South, Love and Glory, The USS Zydecoldsmobile and Broken Hearted Road though there is not a weak track among them. The guitar break in Broken Hearted Road must be heard to be believed, it comes seemingly out of nowehere and threatens to envelop the proceedings and in lesser hands it could have but what it does instead, is burns through the song, spitting out passion and fire without once overstepping the mark. Brilliant.

Love and Glory shows a more sensitive side and the chorus is a strong as anything I have heard until now, it really is a beautiful feelgood song that will have you tapping your feet and singing along to it in no time at all. The USS Zydecoldsmobile stomps and pounds away and there is a nod or two to Zydeco greats such as Beau Jocque in the closing stages, if this selection doesn't make your head rock from side to side then nothing will.

This is the album that The Road We're On wasn't and never will be. Everything is here, the gentle more lyrical sides, the passionate and the fiery, this is a complete album and leaves you with a feeling of total satisfaction upon hearing it. The songs are allowed to develop right in front of you and there is a sense of catharsis and of working something out within the performers. It is a flawless, faultless and beautiful album. Need I say more?

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding showcase of slide-playing and songwriting   March 16, 2001

Those familiar with Sonny Landreth's earlier albums and his contributions to a range of artists will find Levee Town an outstanding showcase of both his slide-playing ability and, more notably, songwriting talent. Take for granted the tasty and often yelping slide work and concentrate if you will on what must rate, lyrically, as his best work to date. The album focusses on experiences close to home and, for me, captures perfectly the atmosphere of Louisiana and its spread of musical cultures from Zydeco to Blues. The inclusion of artists including Bonnie Raitt and Joe Mouton simply add to the experience (check out Mouton's grinding, rhythmic chops on 'The U.S.S. Zydecoldsmobile' - how can an accordion sound so funky?). If you've toyed with Cajun or Zydeco, as I have, but wanted a bit more oomph try Levee Town, it's one of the genuine musical highlights of the year.
