Look for earlier records to find the unique Sonny November 2, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to agree with Trevor. I also have most of Sonny Landreth's previous albums as well as albums by Beausoleil with whom he played for a while. He used to be one of the most original and inventive slide guitarists with a very distinctive style, but this record is not much more than a re-hash of some earlier stuff and the originality is very faded. When I saw him in London at a concert, I found it very disappointing that he had practically gone all the way to a heavy metal-like sound pumping up the volume to Motorhead levels. This offering lacks his old subtlety, which had been his strength. If you want to get the best example of Sonny's unique and heart-stopping cosmic slide sound (from his electric era), get "Outward Bound". There's nothing like it. Also, if you want to hear Sonny at his best as an exceptionally recognisable session musician, get Marva Wright's excellent "Born with the Blues" record.
Sonny on Fire May 19, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Wow, at last a blistering live set from Sonny on CD. This is the CD a lot of people have been waiting for. This is a Slide Guitar Master in full flight cooking up a rocking Zydeco Cajun Slide Guitar Masterpiece. This is a Powerhouse performance by Sonny and by far his best album to date. Should contain a sticker saying MUST BE PLAYED LOUD. If you are a fan of Slide Guitar, this is an essential purchase. Now all we need is a live DVD to be in heaven
Disappointing April 1, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Got some of sonny's earlier solo albums, and the guitar playing shows much more depth and range. Here, he seems stuck to just one sound, and one volume. very little variety of technique or tone. I was disppointed.
