Blues Master masters the Master's Blues September 2, 2008
I was incredibly excited about purchasing this piece of work.I've seen EC touring and listened to most of his albums, particularly the blues oriented ones (some of the solo albums can be bland e.g. August- not a description that can be used for the live sound created both here and on other discs such both the Crossroads DVDs).
Disapointed at all? No - it feels as if EC has taken the essence of the original RJ material and delivered it in a manner that makes the most of current recording techniques, whilst delivering the spirit of Blues as it is meant to be. I've not heard a better sounding blues album! The complementary guitar work of EC & Doyle Bramhall II is exemplary throughout - and especially the acoustic section. Bramhall follows ECs lead - rarely flash, letting his guitar do the work. Seemingly effortless - although no doubt preceded my years of hard work. As noted elsewhere, strange omission from the disc of the promised bonus - particularly of the awesome Queen of Spades - Clapton's tour de force on the 2008 tour. Nevertheless, exceptional. Enjoy

After the too slick and uninspiring 'Me and Mr Johnson' this album is what we were actually after. EC playing Johnson tracks with a bit of passion and verve. He performs each song to perfection and the live recording suits these songs much better than the flat, over-produced 'Me and Mr Johnson'. If I had the choice of these album I'd go for this one every time and I rarely listen to the former album now. The fact that this comes with a 'making of' DVD only adds to the package and it is great to see EC and his band perform these songs live and trace some of Johnson's history. A much better album and more what we expected from an EC Robert Johnson album.

Contrary to the previous album (Me and Mr. Johnson) which was a bit of a let down, this is perfect, absolutely brilliant, a MUST HAVE for blues fans. His version of Terraplane Blues is amazing. And frankly the DVD only would make it worthwhile too. The emotional load behind his admiration for Johnson is tangible. His complicity with Doyle is touching too, like the father grooming the son or something. Really this is the most intimate and touching and technically amazing thing Clapton has done for a long time.

This is the way the Me and Mr Johnson album should have been done. It is a lot less over produced and has a more authentic sound. All the songs are done 'live' and in one take, but are perfect. The acoustic numbers are all superb, in particular 'Me and the Devil Blues' and 'From four until late'. The electric versions of 'Milkcow's Calf Blues', 'Little Queen of Spades', and 'Kindhearted Woman Blues' offer a more contempary take on the Robert Johnson classics - and for me are better than the originals (how dare I?!!). The guitar playing of Clapton and Doyle Bramhall III is incredible - I was blown away watching the DVD - in fact the whole band are on the money. As someone learning to play the blues, it is inspiring and soul destroying at the same time, as I know I'll never be that good. Buy this instead of 'Me and Mr Johnson', you won't regret it.

Have just taken delivery of this D.V.D and C.D. I already have E.C's C.D of Robert J. songs. This set is first class,you can see how the music was made.According to E.C's comments in his book, some of these recordings were made between times spent on other projects.If you want to listen to and see top class musicians DO NOT HESITATE--BUY THIS SET
