excellent variation on the desert blues sound August 14, 2008 This band, formed by a group of Tuareg guitarists including a founder of Tinariwen, have a similar sound to that band, although more stripped down and with perhaps a greater variation in styles.
There are no group vocals, just one or two male voices which, although a little hit and miss on making all the notes, nevertheless have real feeling and range.
The music ranges from very Tinariwen-style desert blues numbers through to one-man-and-a-guitar tracks, which are amongst the best on the album.
There are also faster and slower numbers and altogether it's a well-balanced, interesting album with all the excellent musicianship and integrity of a fully-fledged Tuareg guitar band.
Go buy.
Equally enchanting live and as an album August 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had the pleasure of seeing Terakaft end the Friday night at the Womad world music, arts and culture festival in Wiltshire, UK. I was mesmerised. Admittedly I'd had the whole sunny day behind me and regular cold alcoholic drinks thoughout. The appearance of the band and the amazing light show coupled with the groovy bluesy guitar filled music and lovely vocals made for a great end to the first evening of the festival.
I picked up the album at the festival music store the following day and have listened to it regularly. It does recaptured the experience for me. It catches you unawares by taking you into a little trance for a short time. So although it is bluesy it also has hints of trance, rock and chanting. Each song on the album has a great deal more variety than I remember at the festival. Some are very catchy. Even though I do no understand a word. Highly recommended.
