Not defintive, but a good collection of Vee-Jay sides April 9, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is not the "definitive" John Lee Hooker-collection, but it is a good sampler of his classic, band-backed Vee-Jay sides from the fifites and sixties. Hooker recorded some of his best and most accessible music for Vee-Jay, including "Boom Boom", "Crawlin' King Snake", "This Is Hip", "It Serves Me Right To Suffer", "Dimples", and "I'm Mad Again", and while not everybody will agree with the track selection (Vee-Jay titles like "Maudie", "Old Time Shimmy", "Time Is Marching" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" are all missing), this is a really solid compilation. But take a look at Tomato's "The Early Years" vol. 1 and 2 as well if you're looking for band-backed Hook.
