Amazon.co.uk Review This career-spanning box of three CDs and a DVD celebrates a legacy that looms larger than that of any blues-rocking guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Despite fears that a series of posthumous releases had depleted the Stevie Ray Vaughan vaults, previously unreleased gems dominate the selection. Highlights extend from Vaughan's swaggering apprenticeship with Paul Ray and the Cobras to slash-and-burn concert performances from the final month of his life. There are obligatory dips into the songbooks of Hendrix and Buddy Guy, appearances on MTV Unplugged and Austin City Limits and instrumental interplay with brother Jimmie Vaughan and tour-mate Jeff Beck. Though his guitar never loses its flame-thrower intensity, the set documents his progression from the show-off licks of the young "Stevie Rave On" into a fully rounded artistry of soulful depth. --Don McLeese

HAD TO BUY THIS.... May 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had heard a few srv tracks before i bought this,i had also read all the reviews good and bad.I decided i had to have it just to satisfy my own couriosity as to how good this guy really was.All i can say is that it is so good that i played it solid for a whole fortnight,i listened to nothing else except this boxset. If your a fan of outstanding guitar playing and great vocals you will not be disappointed. As far as boxsets go this one is up there with the best of them..(5 STARS ALL THE WAY),ps the dvds pretty good aswell
DVD is short but its a very enjoyable box set! August 24, 2006 I was bought this as a present and I had a fair few of SRV's albums already. Some of the tunes on here are great and were released here before being subsequently made available on other albums. If you're a fan chances are you have most of this.
I really like the DVD as its a collection on tracks that were left over from the Live in Austin recording (isn't that what normally makes up a box set anyway?? Left overs!). "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is awesome (I always loved that track!!) When SRV kicks in his solo after the keyboard solo its just brilliant!! I don't know what pedal he's using but its a great sound. He breaks a sting on one of the songs which is fun to see how he "recovers"!
If you're a casual fan get this! If you're a real fan you probably have it. If you want to learn about SRV, get his greatest hits CD and "Live at the El Mocambo" DVD!
Great set to have but... September 2, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
.....for a box set, I'd expected more from the DVD. It seems all too short with bits and songs chopped out. CD wise it's a good selection of his songs, and the inlay card gives a good account of his career, from his early start with the guitar as a young boy, to his sad, and tragic death. Worth buying if you're a SRV fan, but buy all his other albums aswell!
Awsome, just Awsome June 2, 2004 3 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was previously introduced to srv by my 2 older mates (55 and 60yrs of age) who were like, listen to it, you will like it. i was like yeah yeah i'll listen to it soon. but never got round to listening to srv till recently. boy was i wowed. this man plays the guitar like no one else. i know people go on about hendrix (not impressed by him i must say) but ill take srv over any one any day.im into my guitars big time and if theres an idol to be had it has to be stevie ray, he is a god. buy the box set beleive me you wont be dissapointed. As most box sets are, largely a waste of money September 29, 2003 22 out of 31 found this review helpful
This retrospective is nicely packaged, but the material doesn't stand up to close analysis. If you're new to Stevie Ray Vaughan, then the best thing you could do is buy all his studio albums - Texas Flood, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step and the posthumous (but outstanding) The Sky Is Crying. If you want some moving pictures to go with it, then buy the simply jaw-dropping Stevie Ray Vaughan Live At The El Mocambo - which gives you over an hour of a young and hungry unknown gobsmacking a small bar in Canada, as opposed to a fairly complacent global rock star knocking out a six song set to a seated TV audience. The DVD in this boxed set is really poor, actually - it's extremely short, and there are no interviews or extraneous material, and Stevie's tone isn't especially hot either. If you're familiar with Stevie's albums you'll already have a lot of the material here, and the tracks you won't have aren't really much chop anyway (there's usually a reason materially is "previously unreleased"). The upshort is that Stevie Ray Vaughan, like his spiritual forebear Jimi Hendrix, recorded a small body of truly awesome material, and the industry has been slicing and dicing that, and what ever other poor quality live sets and outtakes they can find since the great man dialled eleven on the big amplifier in the sky back in 1990. This set is purely optional.
