Five Stars Minimum November 22, 2008 I am writing this review at the same time as I'm refreshing my memories of it. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but for anyone to give it one lone star! I'm sorry: did I miss something? This is an album by JIMI HENDRIX, dear! JIMI....you know, set fire to his guitars, played it with his teeth....Oh! never mind....the trolley will be round in a minute....nice cup of tea for you, dear! Seriously; this is a brilliant record, and would have spun Jimi out almost in a new direction. 'Dolly Dagger' and 'Angel' are two of his finest recordings. Much of it has a more soulful feel than his previous albums. I'd recommend it to anyone.
a glimpse of Jimi,s next album January 27, 2008 I feel that this is an incomplete album as it was assembled posthumously, but as a Hendrix fan it is essential as it gives an insight into the direction Jimi might have taken his next album. I would never recommend this as an introduction to Hendrix, but there are still tracks that are hugely enjoyable here. The opener,Freedom,is almost like an electric big band swing style track with Jimis guitar driving the whole track along. If he were alive he would be opening his Vegas residency set with this track along with Celene Dion on backing vocals. Other tracks sound like they still needed some work like Izabella and Room Full Of Mirrors, but the album is still the next best thing to a new Hendrix release. Only 4 stars cos its compiled, but for me personally the man can do no wrong!
Very Good, Could Have Been Better February 21, 2007 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This album was/is promoted by the Hendrix Estate as being the `real' final Hendrix album, replacing albums like The Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes.
It isn't, simply because Jimi did not have a finalised track layout for his fourth studio album. However, it does have most of the tracks which he had either finished, or was working on before his untimely death. Some tracks sound unfinished, for example, Hey Baby has Jimi asking whether the microphone is on.
First Rays is a more satisfying listen than Cry of Love or Rainbow Bridge, but for some reason it still contains the 1968 outtake `My Friend', which doesn't really belong with the soul/rock/funk sound of most of these songs.
Some of the tracks from the South Saturn Delta CD which followed this, such as `Midnight Lightning', `Power of Soul' and `Message to Love' would have fitted in well on this album, although you can always do this on your iPod.
These issues aside, this is a very good album indeed, with some of Jimi's best later material: Angel, Freedom, Room Full of Mirrors, Earth Blues, In From the Storm and Ezy Ryder are standouts and Drifting has some absolutely lovely guitar work.
He really was a genius.
Eddie Kramer's remix has dealt with some of the quirky balances and mixes of the original tapes, and the songs sound the best they ever have. The packaging is excellent and this is a must buy for any Hendrix fan.
Just Not the Same January 5, 2006 7 out of 27 found this review helpful
I must say "First Rays of the New Rising" is the most disappointing Jimi Hendrix album I have ever purchased. I own 'Are You Experienced', 'Axis: Bold As Love' and 'Live at Woodstock' as well as 3 others, but my 7th Hendrix album was nothing compared to the raw sounds and rhythms of Hendrix's previous work. The album is mainly compiled from the sounds Hendrix produced at Woodstock. However, the style is completely different, and the songs I loved so much, from one of the most famous musical events in history, have been replaced with sounds and effects that are, in my opinion, unnecessary. To my disappointment, ‘Isabella’ - on the album - had backing singers, and was not as good compared to the Woodstock version. The song 'Beginnings' was a shortened, effects-filled version of 'Jam Back at the House' from Woodstock and that too was just not the same. Although this may not be a very useful review, I would like to simply voice my opinion on the album. This album is not for those hardcore Hendrix fans that idolised and loved his early sounds before the original experience parted.
Absolutely brilliant. July 9, 2004 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is the hendrix amlbum poised for release when hendrix died. roughly 80% finished, all it lacked for a release was the official approval and the final hendrix "touch". Sadly, little of the material will be new to serious fans, as most of it has been in unauthorised compilations etc. But that can't stop you enjoying them. The album carries a more rock-esque vibe, with less light music and a thicker tone, evident in ezy ryder (my personal favourite)and freedom.A top quality album=, well worth the money
