Fantastic, the best the three Steve Martin stand up CDs in my opinion; but then who the hell am I?

1 out of 5 stars Rockin' Banjo - Rubbish Jokes   September 21, 2004

Steve Martin's been something of a hit-and-miss over the years, peaking with films such as Roxanne and The Man With Two Brains in which he is undoubtedly hilarious. I can say, without hesitation though, that this is the worst I've ever known him. The jokes, at the worst of times, are juvenile, over-long and anti-climatic, often padded out with truly bizarre sound effects. A few of the throw-away gags raise a chuckle to be fair, but they're few and fair between, and aren't worth the trouble of swimming through the rest of the set.

On the plus side, he's damned good with a banjo. So good, that it almost makes up for the jokes - hell, at one point, he uses the banjo as an excuse for casting aside bad news and poor excuses. One can only wonder whether he was aware of the irony at that point.

So, not very funny. Maybe an album of banjo songs would be good though.

5 out of 5 stars Martin At His Hilarious Best   June 26, 2001

Let's get small brings Martin's brilliant brand of humour (only glimpsed in his movies) to the audience in a stylish and totally professional manner. This recording does not lose its humor in the UK as it concentrates on areas that all can relate to. Martin is unique in this masterpiece of comedy, in that he is able to make the listener feel as though they are in the audience and not missing a thing. Mad at my mother (just one of the topics covered) graphicaly highlights his pure genius to take a subject and target it fot extreme laughter. This certainly ranks as possibly his best piece of work to date, and will claim a place in the annuls of humor for years to come. The stuff budding comediens should lear from.
