3 out of 5 stars A bit of a missed opportunity   October 12, 2003

The idea of an "unplugged" Whitesnake album is appealing, and "Starkers In Tokyo" does feature a lovely rendition of the classic Deep Purple-ballad "Soldier Of Fortune".

But most of the songs don't really work too well in this setting. Coverdale's vocals are excellent, but Adrian Vandenberg's lone guitar just doesn't provide the musical backing that these songs need, and the extremely lean arrangement doesn't suit songs like "Too Many Tears" and "Here I Go Again".

Vandenberg picks more than he strums, and a rhythm guitar or two (and preferably an acoustic bass as well) would have worked wonders.

There are some good moments on "Starkers In Tokyo", but this is mainly an album for serious Coverdale-fans. Casual listeners probably won't find too much here to hold their attention, unless they become really, really taken with David Coverdale's rich, soulful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Nirvana!   September 20, 2001

This has got to be one of the greatest and atmospheric unplugged releases ever. The voice of David Coverdale is awesome and the acoustic playing of Adrian Vandenberg is note perfect. This is an undiscovered gem and I'm looking forward to spending many an evening chilling out with a few bourbons and Whitesnake Starkers in Tokyo....Superb!

A tender journey through Whitesnake's catalogue of hits from the 80's. It is a fine addition to your collection regardless of generation or taste. The songs breathe new life with Mr Coverdale's smooth husky vocals and Adrian Vandenberg's tasteful acoustic approach.A great way to remember one of the most successful big hair rock bands of the 80's. Buy it now - you will not regret it.

This album is a must for all Whitesnake/Coverdale fans...this is Coverdale stripped bare, the vocals will melt your cd player.Vandenburgs acoustic work is excellent throughout. Coverdale has one of (if not the) finest voice/vocal range in music. Dim the lights grab a drink and a partner, and just enjoy this album. For anybody unsure this album is worth the money purely for the strongest version of Soldier of Fortune recorded..The acoustic workings of familiar rockers is refreshing ..the ballads even more soulful ..go and buy this album and enjoy

5 out of 5 stars One of the strangest yet brilliant cd's from D.C   January 5, 2000

The first time you listen to this you will like it. The second time you listen you will love it. Some of the acustic work is a match for the old snake ( M.Moody/B.Marsden ) a must have album for seriuos Whitesnake followers. By the way David is like a fine Wiskey he has matured well with age.
