Amazon.co.uk Review
He's been a cowboy and a pimp and an American bad-ass, but now Kid Rock is just plain Cocky: it's nice to know that fame, fortune and the envy of millions have allowed him to be the proper rock star he's always wanted to be. There's no real change from his breakthrough album Devil Without a Cause, then; Cocky is another hard-partying mix of hard rock and hip-hop, backed once again by his Twisted Brown Truckers (including DJ and star-in-his-own-right Uncle Kracker). If anything, the Kid's now taken his act farther South, mixing in the delta blues (no really, it's there in "Drunk in the Morning"), country music (realising, quite rightly, that one can never have too much pedal-steel guitar) and Dixie-fried rock (he even samples Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" on "You Never Met a Motherfucker Quite Like Me"). And, at times, the Kid even starts to act his age, though we all always knew he'd grow old disgracefully. So while for the most part the lyrics still follow the same themes (women, booze, money, his general greatness), there are glimpses of genuine introspection that leak through on songs such as "Picture" (with, of all people, Sheryl Crow) and "Lonely Load of Faith". It doesn't stick, though; once a Kid, always a Kid. Fortunately, there's nobody who does it better than him. --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars Cocky, damn right   July 19, 2005
Well, he's back! RIP to little man Joe C. This album is dedicated to the memory of Joe C, and Kid Rock mentions him in the first track Trucker Anthem. I think he expresses a lot of points in this album, things he done, said, been through, some of which is anger. As you listen to the album you will feel the hardcore guitar and pumping bass, especially when you decide to put it in your car stereo. It's all cocky, til you hit Picture. You hear something different, making sure its the right cd in the machine, man you hear that Kid Rock can sing and does he do it well, cocky enough he does. Country music maybe his next journey, because this is one album worth buying.

After buying Devil without a cause and the history of rock I was quite suprised when I first listened to Cocky. Its not as heavy as the other two albums but the softer songs: Picture, Lonely Road of faith and what I learned out on the road are the best songs on the album. Its got something for everyone and if you own the other two albums you've got a great mix of rock, rap and southern rock. Best three albums I've brought.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Rock's   March 20, 2003
Wow! There are so many aspects to this album. There is your typical Kid style of Forever. The amazing country track Picture. The hip hop collaboration with snoop on WCSR. Kid is so diverse and talented. He is an amazing performer. Saw him at Brixton a couple of years ago and the show was breath taking!

4 out of 5 stars Pimp of the Nation turns down the volume   February 10, 2003

After 2 to 3 years since the platinum selling "Devil Without a Cause" the kid is back on the block ready to show the critics what he thinks of all the bands in the world today. For all of those who loved Kid Rock for his heavy metal/hip-hop music turn away now as this one is mature (in some sense listen to Picture and Lonely Road of Faith if ya don't believe me)and very much the opposite to his usual stuff.
Worth Buying if youe intersted in a new style from Kid Rock, but its a bit of a let down as he is much better when he is not mature

5 out of 5 stars KId Rock back at his best!   January 5, 2003

After the huge success of Devil Without a Cause, I was shocked at his second album History of Rock, which was quite poor and lacking the quality of songs that made his first album good. Cocky though is a return of his best work, and an album that sees a slight change in his music style. The hip-hop & rock is still there but there are also more ballard type songs in the Only God Knows Why mold. The album starts off in usual Kid Rock fashion with the upbeat rapping, rocking and ranting songs like Forever and Cocky, but I prefer the songs later on the CD such as Drunk in the Morning, Lonely Road of Faith, Midnight Train to Memphis (With a nice Kid Rock twist at the end) and the Duet with Sheryl Crow 'Picture'. I like how on songs like Drunk in the Morning, What I learned out on the road, and Midnight Train to Memphis how he switches from the ballardy song into his usual rap&rock style and it doesn't seem out of place. When you line up Kid Rock's albums you certainly see a progression in his music and also in his maturity. I can't wait to see what his next album will be like.
