When the best song on an album is a reasonably good cover of a mediocre bubblegum pop song (Smokin' in the Boys Room), then you know it's not going to be a classic.
Following the excellent first two albums, Too Fast For Love and Shout at the Devil, Crue take a serious nose dive with this lame effort. It was reasonably well received at the time, and the live shows were excellent but this is a real blot on the Crue landscape.
It is, and always was, cheap throw-away big hair pop-rock, as churned out by many bands at this time. Crue had been different to the others up to this point, they had something the others didn't, an attitude and an edge that shows up on the first two releases, but is all but gone on this one.
When I look at the album cover it reminds me of a large pair of pants. Which is pretty much what Theatre of Pain is. Pants. Large! Still, happy days.... brings back some good memories of the time. Nostalgia eh!
Most under-rated Crue album made. July 14, 2008 Although the various members of the band have often slated this album, i think it is one of their best. City Boy Blues is a sleazy, bar room biker checking out the local talent, while Smokin' In The Boy's Room tells you what he was like as a teen; all attitude and hormones! Louder Than Hell slows the record down a bit but then comes Motley's biggest sleeper track of all time. The outstanding Keep Your Eye On The Money.
Why this wasnt released as a single is a crime, it is cocky, fast and in your face, and is a solid slice of LA 80's metal. Home Sweet Home is a slower paced song that isnt as cheesy or sad as later Crue efforts such as Time For Change or such rubbish. One you could flick your lighter to and not feel stupid.
Use It Or Lose It drops the pace after, Save Our Souls too. But the first five songs are more than worth the money. Like Glam Metal, you'll love this!
Worth a listen July 3, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After an evening of digesting Motley Crue's notoroius 3rd album I was quite surprised. I went into the album expecting the worst, as this was when they were most messed up, but was surprised how good it was. The opening track 'City boy blues' is a good, honest, no frills rock n roller which sets a good mood for the album. Followed by a good cover of 'Smokin in the boys room' you are now in the mood to rock. The album clincher comes a couple of tracks later in the shape of 'Keep your eye on the money'. This really should have been the hit single as it has everything 1985 wanted - it's a bubblegum, big hair, LA rock track in it's purest form and for me, the reason to buy this album. Therefore you can sort of forgive 'Home sweet home' for being the token ballad and the fillers in the shape of 'Save our souls' and 'Use it or lose it'. The only real downfall with this album is 'Raise your hands to rock'. What were they thinking! But the expanded album is saved yet again, surprisingly by the demo version of 'Home sweet home' which is slightly slower, but so much more soulful than the massively over-produced album version. The sound of the album is not as big as Dr. Feelgood, but still has much more punch than Too Fast For Love. The guitars and drums sound great and although, according to the sleeve notes, Mick Mars sights it as one of his least favourite albums, his talent shines brightly. To play as well as it sounds, in the state they were in at the time, they must be good! If you like the debut albums from Poison and Faster Pussycat, then this is for you.
Still a fantastic album April 21, 2007 Yes, Nikki Sixx says this album is the worst, and yes, he may be correct...but it is still one of the best rock albums ever!!! More glam, more fun but more filler still makes it an awesome album.
New to the Crue, try Dr Feelgood...to expand your collection, buy this excellent album.
Very Good Album April 2, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a very underrated album. Motley Crue themselves say its their worst, but I disagree. It has some phenomenal songs such as Smokin' In The Boys Room, Keep Your Eye On The Money, Home Sweet Home, Tonight (We Need A Lover) and Raise Your Hands To Rock. All great songs that make this album terrific. You also get the video for Home Sweet Home, which is the greatest rock video ever made. It's a masterpiece and one of the greatest albums to come out of the 80s. BUY IT NOW!!
