Amazon.co.uk Review
Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D--or "Year Zero Remixed", if you don't do leetspeak, is the latest example of Trent Reznor's urge to see Nine Inch Nails material dissected, reworked, mistreated and reinterpreted by his friends and peers. For many artists, remix albums are by their nature slightly uneven collections, lacking the common thread that makes a good record a consistent piece of work--yet past NIN offerings like 1995's Further Down the Spiral have somehow bucked this trend, and Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D is no exception. This isn't, you suspect so much to do with any similarities between the artists--everyone's here from British synth-poppers Ladytron to beat poet Saul Williams to minimalist classical ensemble Kronos Quartet--as it is the consistency of Reznor's vision; no matter how thorough the audio mangling, his damaged humanity still has a habit of poking through the gaps. Highlights include the smudged ambience of Fennesz's take on "In This Twilight" and the immersive, abstract techno of Olof Dreijer's 15 minute remix of "Me I'm Not", but the real coup here is two mixes by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert of New Order that pull off machine-like synth-pop and drifting vintage electronics ambience leaving Reznor's vocals wholly intact. --Louis Pattison

4 out of 5 stars Year Zero vs. R3M1X3D   January 21, 2008
After listening to NIN now for 4 years, I have every album but may not know them them as well as the 'older' generation who have grown up with NIN music, but I can safely say that I do love Nine Inch Nails as much as the biggest fan.

So, I hear about Year zero remixed, I already have 'Year Zero' and I thought the whole concept was brilliant. The noise, the rhythm, just everything. And from the other remixes 'fixed, further down...etc. I knew this one would be just as good. Then I find out it's different artists, their own interpretations of the songs.

The remixes are good. But I would have loved to have heard Trent's versions, his remixes. There are some really stand out tracks for me,these are:

My Violent Heart - Sounds abit like those citroen adverts with the dancing car. But it is so good. So bassy and melodic, this relases a different side to the song that is great!!

The Beginning of the End - Again a great song alot of melody, bass and distortion. One of my favs of both albums.

Capital G - The first beats atract you into the song, and then there is all this clapping going on with an eventual distorted guitar. This sounds a bit like those citroen adverts too! Trent's vocals are distorted until he gets to the chorous where he sings 'dropped/dropped/dropped...' loads of times and then evily says 'a bomb' then the whole track goes mad, so much bass and distortion!

Meet your Master - When I first heard this I just thought Wow! This track is great. If you love wierd, distorted, bassy and brilliant tunes then listen to this song. It's great!!

In this Twilight - My fav of year zero, this version is much more stranger, more eerie but not in a sad way. It sound like the sun is rising from the skys, 'everything will be ok' music, it sort of brings a smile to your face but then you kind of feel a bit sad too, when the song fades.

The whole album is good. Every musician has done a good job of their little projects. But like someone else reviewed, is it necessary? For some yes, it brings out the other side of the songs, another side of 'Year Zero' and sort of brings closure to the album. Almost like Trent is ready to move on to a new album, a new concept, a new beggining of the end.
For the devoted NIN fans, yes it is necessary. It is a good remix album that deserves to be listened to.

But for other people, it isn't. If you don't know the concept of 'Year Zero' then you'll think that it's all a bit weird. I suggest you get a copy of 'Year Zero' and If you like it, get this.
But if you don't, don't because it is the same lyrics but with more 'melodic noise'.
But then again, if you didn't like 'Year Zero' because of the music you could try this because, like I said, it sheds new light on the songs and is more upbeat that the original.

In my opinion, I think that Year Zero is more than able to stand on it own feet without the back up of this remix album, others will think differently. But I love Nine inch nails so much, I could listen to the remixs over and over, they aren't a disappointment, but I still prefer the proper 'Year Zero'.

Each time a Nine Inch Nails album is released, you can be pretty sure that a remix CD will be released within the same year. Often these albums tend to disappoint, given the excellent nature of the original songs. However, Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D, despite the ridiculous name, is probably the best and most innovative of the bunch.

Containing remixes by such artists as The Knife, ex-members of New Order, and Ladytron, there are some pretty high profile people mixing the songs. However, the best of the bunch may well be the remix of `My Violent Heart', which was in fact remixed by a random fan. Sleazy, aggressive and electronic, the remix is probably as good as the original song. If you fancy giving a remix a go yourself, the album also contains a bonus DVD with all of the original multitrack recordings of the album - worth the price of the album alone.

You'll be hard placed to find any tracks on this album that are particularly bad. Although the remix of `Me, I'm Not' drags on, that's easily undone by the tribal drumming of `The Warning', the beautiful acoustic guitar work of `The Great Destroyer', or the power of `The Beginning of the End'. So ignore the stupid title of the record, and give it a listen.

I was looking forward to listening to this but was disappointed. The only tracks I liked were 02 - The Great Destroyer & 13 - In This Twilight. The rest of it just seemed to be pointless & boring.
I think the other NIN remixes on The Limitless Potential were much better & seemed to capture more of the NINness of the music if that makes any sense.

4 out of 5 stars its better than year zero   November 30, 2007

This is a dance record some people like dance music, some people like to dance, trent does, i do (aaskisser). Its almost getting into house territory. Track 2 the great destroyer is infinately better even though the track is played on an acoustic guitar. cut track 11 though that is poor. The album does have elements of 70s funk/disco and heavily leanings towards 80s electro and house, but it is dark very dark and it conjures up images of a dark industrial future much darker than that of year zero. all round i thought this was a much better record than year zero.
