Amazon.co.uk Review After reaching their peak in the late 80s and early 90s with albums like Pornograffiti and chart-bothering ballads such as "More Than Words," American rockers Extreme seemed to deliquesce into the musical horizon, never to be heard from again. But 13 years later the band are back with a brand new album that re-treads their classic Queen-meets-Aerosmith "funky rock" schtick. "Saudades" is a Portuguese term for a form of nostalgia, usually for someone or something that you're missing - in this case, good old fashioned rock & roll. So they went into an LA studio and made some more. The original threesome--vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger--teamed up with drummer Kevin Figueiredo to recreate a record that has all the hallmarks of their prior classics. Opening with the immediately contagious "Star" (which features some swaggering guitar and Queen-style harmonizing), Extreme barrel their way through funk rock ("Learn To Love"), catchy blues ("Take Us Alive"), sentimental ballads ("Ghost") and grunge ("Comfortably Dumb")--in other words, a little bit of everything. Cherone's vocals remains compelling and the band's mercurial fusion of genres is as tight as ever, making this a very welcome comeback.

Extreme - Saudades De Rock October 14, 2008 About a month ago I stumbled across "Extreme" after watching a Youtube video featuring "Lil Jack Horny" as background music. After that, I done some more digging & bought their entire collection of CDs...
These guys are just awesome and I really wish I'd heard their music sooner.
"Saudades De Rock" is a terrific album and is even better when the volume is cranked up real loud. It has echos of "Pornograffiti" in some songs but, it's got a sound all of it's own when you listen more closely. To be completely honest here...it did take me a few listening sessions to really get into it but once I did...I was blown away by the opener "Star"!
This album has a wonderful mix of head-banging metal riffs, funk & melodic drums. It's a combination I would struggle to live without! My next aim is to see these guys live on stage!!
As for songs, my particular favourites are "Star" which is fast-paced & very much like some of their older material. "Comfortably Dumb" for me has many similarities with the song "Pornograffiti" though it is a little calmer as songs go...more grungy, Nirvana-esque stuff. Great listening though. "Take us alive" & "run" are also equally brilliant tracks, as is the entire album. Love it!
Any "Extreme" fan...old or new...will love this album. It's more that worthy of the 5 stars I'm giving it for it's sheer brilliance & overall funky-ness!
Try listening to it while cruising down the motorway...makes for fantastic driving music! :)
Worth buying even if it's just to hear Nuno again :o) October 1, 2008 Well I guess I'm biased, but I loved Pornograffitti and so was looking forward to anything from Extreme to be honest. This album is a real mixed bag, but if you're a fan you will probably like it as it has all the incredients of their earlier records. Not least is Nuno's awesome guitar playing. I was blown away by Nuno's style 18yrs ago and I still think he is the best rock guitarist ever. I've heard most of the shredders like Vai, Satch, MacAlpine, Timmons, Eric Glass, Gongalo, Guthrie Govan, Mattias Eklundh, Batio, Shawn Lane, Moore, Malmsteen, Rusty Cooley etc. etc. etc. and what they all lack compared to Nuno is 1. context and 2. rock sensibility. Nuno' solo's fit the songs. I also love the way he attacks the strings, with real conviction. If you like rock guitar - buy this album (and Pornograffitti).
best album of 2008 September 19, 2008 A truly fantastic comeback.
The music has grown, and takes in influences from Nuno's solo stuff and combines it with the spirited vocals that i feel were somewhat lacking there.
You need this!
You Must Buy This Album September 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're a fan of Extreme this is a must buy album. After the disappointment that was Waiting For The Punchline, Extreme are back on form. There are only two 'weaker' tracks in my opinion, Stars (the opening track) and King of the Ladies, the rest are Extreme at their power ballad, guitar playing best. I just cannot get enough of this album!
Extreme bring it home! August 28, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Reading the other reviews of this album shows that not all reviewers are aware of the band's history. Anyone who writes off 'Waiting for the Punchline' or cannot to relate to solo albums like 'Schizoponic' doesn't understand how music develops and grows. PLEASE don't mention Queen! Any musician is influenced by others and there are many influences.
You have to think back to how 'Pornograffitti' sounded the first time? To me this new album is just as good and is growing with every listen and you know that when you see and hear them live it's going to be even better! Nothing will ever top the total feel of 'III Sides' - but then how many bands can say they have produced a true masterpiece? This album has a natural progression from the genius of III Sides to the frustration of Waiting for the Punchline (that seemed to speak volumes about pushy record companies wanting a 'Commercial Sound').
Extreme have delivered their own special mix, which is truly eclectic with the 'Yee Ha' to the 'Heavy Funk Metal' to the 'Heart Breaker' ('Last Hour'). Like all great musicians it can't be labelled because they can excel at all classifications of music.
