Fantastic, but utterly pointless and frustrating..! November 13, 2008 After hearing snippets of this LP on the great Podkisst program( see iTunes podcast directory ), i had to get this, as us long-time Kiss fans will literally buy ANYTHING remotely new by this awesome band. Yet having played it a few times, one thought persists: why can't they get off their backsides, and do something original? AC/DC, Metallica, Crue, and umpteen others have risked 'staining' their legacies and put out new LP's this year. Why not Kiss? Because they're genuinely scared they'll blow it, big time, as we know they have a tendency to do. This LP features the current Thayer / Singer line-up, but instead of enjoying the skills of these two supremely talented musos, the band have amassed their considerable abilities and produced exact clones of previously recorded Kiss classics. No doubt, utilising contemporary recording techniques, they can now be used for modern video games and movie soundtracks. Frustratingly for me, when you have the aforementioned musicians in the band, you want to hear them stretch themselves, and at least put a new twist on the old material. But no - Gene and Paul make everyone stick to the brief, and the result is a disciplined exercise in doing cover-versions of your own songs. Don't get me wrong - the execution is flawless, and everything, especially the vocals and harmonies, is spot-on. ( If it wasn't for the import price, this would be a great intro to the band, if you're not that familiar with them ). And it certainly may be of interest to hear Eric's vocals on Black Diamond, or his interpretation of his great predecessor's drums on 'I Love It Loud' ( more cymbals - ! ), but ultimately, you just end up going back to their REAL studio classics, like 'Creatures' and 'Lick It Up', and thinking, 'if only..!' My suggestion to you is, if you can hang on long enough, Kiss will probably use this as a bonus disk on their next proper LP, in order to get a high chart placing. Tommy has said that he is sure Kiss will record new material again, so keep hold of your money, and try and wait this one out...
