The Flame still burns bright... November 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well the Flame still burns as bright as it ever did, the Master Musician has riffed the Stratocaster into the Stratosphere.* * * *The album starts of with a nice classically influenced movement, then all hell is unleashed, with riffs and solo's flying from the fingers of Yngwie. The album is well and truly in flames by the time you get to the second track, and this is maintained throughout the whole musical journey that is Perpetual Flame.* *Some notable changes come through the speakers by the time you get to /MAGIC CITY. The bluesy feel is enhanced by sitars and the whole psychedelic feel is mindblowing. This has to be without doubt one of the best tracks Yngwie has ever done, the pure Magic from the Wizards Fret board of that track is spellbinding./* * * *The whole production is again a masterpiece of musicianship, with contributions from Tim/ (Vocals),/ Derek/ (Keys),/ and Patrik /(Drums)/ all of which show why Yngwie has them in Rising Force. The mastering of the album is also very well done, and I look forward to more new and re-mastered material on the Rising Force Label.* * * *So as the dieing embers of the /Heavy Heart /track fades, it seems that YJM and Rising Force has once again produced an album that will stand as a great piece of heavy rock music.* * * *MORE IS DEFEINTALY MORE...* *
Burnt Out Flame! November 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
After the last few albums by Yngwie being rather mediocre, many had high hopes for this especially with the addition of new singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens. Sadly this is a very poor effort on all fronts - weak song writing and dreadful production. No stand out songs at all, no memorable one's either. Yngwie desparately needs to get firstly a good producer, and secondly songwriters. To save money Yngwie uses his home studio either it's not up to scratch or he's clueless what he is doing in there, as production is awful & weak sound quality too; amazing someone with perfect pitch could listen back to this and think sound quality & production was really good. Sound is heavier on some tracks than previously like the opener 'Death Dealer', the Instrumentals are even tedious like 'Caprici Di Diablo'. Worse Yngwie frequently improvises the solos which consist of rapid barrage of notes , sustained note another rapid barrage - very tiresome & boring but he's done it for 20+ years now. Yngwie has done decent stuff in the past , still pretty good live, but album wise avoid this or any recent output like the plague!
The shred master returns..... November 17, 2008 Being an Yngwie fan for over twenty years I can honestly admit that I don't ever think he will conjure up the magic that he did on his first three albums, however the brilliance of Perpetual Flame should not be overlooked. Nothing much to say on Yngwie's guitar work, expect that it is his usual extremely high standard. What sets this release apart from his previous ones after Trilogy was released is the ferociousness of the songs and the way they are delivered. The album is relentless and every single song is memorable and enjoyable. Ripper Owens on vocals is a fantastic catch for Yngwie as his style totally suits the type of music on offer here - plenty of high pitched screaming and the like. Some say the lyrics are cheesy, but this is the style that Yngwie writes in and I think he should be congratulated upon in being brave enough to continue in this form when obviously other groups feel the need to have change in an attempt to sell CD's. My only slight issue is that at times the vocals seem to be a bit pushed out in the mixing and Owens's voice is not given the chance to fully express itself. Nonetheless, a work of art from the maestro and here's hoping that the next release continues in the same vain. Well done Mr Malmsteen !!!
Good...but not as good as it could have been! November 4, 2008 I was really looking forward to this album for one reason. That was that it had Tim 'Ripper' Owens on lead vocals. He is one of my favourite modern singers and I thought that this combination (The Ripper/Malmsteen) would have just been awesome. On the whole, this is a good album with many good songs but the production and mixing is quite bad. The guitar is way to loud in places and completely masks The Ripper's fanastic voice. They just just shouldn't let Yngwie mix or produce albums, he does it all wrong. Anyway, time for a track by track run through:
Death Dealer - This songs starts off very fast and is a good intro to the album. The piercing scream of The Ripper sets the scene for the album but then his actual vocals are quite masked and the whole track seems quite muddy, it has a good solo though. 8/10
Damnation Game - The beginning riff for this song sounds a bit like 'I'll See the Light Tonight' but this song then turns out to be quite different to that song. In my opinion, this is one of the strongest songs on the album and is not mixed to badly, well, not compared to some of the others atleast. 9/10
Live to Fight (Another Day) - This one starts off with a nice classical sounding riff and then turns into a quite slowish 'chugging' song. It's pretty heavy and features good vocals from Tim. 7/10
Red Devil - This, along with 'Damnation Game' are my two favourite songs from the album. This is a powerful metal song with great pearcing vocals and good guitars. 9/10
Four Horsemen (of the Apocalypse) - This song is not bad, but nothing really special. The Ripper's vocals are actually quite annoying on this song. 6/10
Priest of the Unholy - After the rather cheesey keyboard intro, this song goes into another slow paced heavy song. It has some good vocal parts but is generally quite boring. 6/10
Be Careful What You Wish For - This is another quite good song with good vocals and a good guitar riff. It also has very powerful and fast drums. 7/10
Caprici Di Diablo - This is the first insturmental song on the album. It's not a bad one but sounds like all the other of Malmsteen's instrumentals. The guitarplaying is superb though. 8/10
Lament - Another instrumental track. Just sounds like a slower verision of Caprici Di Diablo to be honest. 7/10
Magic City - This song features Yngwie on vocals. I don't know why he always trys to sing as he's really not very good at all. Atleast he highers singers for 90% of his songs. It's not a bad song though to be fair, quite bluesy. 7/10
Eleventh Hour - This is the longest song on the album at 8:03 and is another quite slowish song. It has some great vocals by Tim Owens and some haunting keyboards during the riffs. 7/10
Heavy Heart - The final track on the album is another longish instrumental. Good but nothing special and a bit boring. 6/10
Overall, it's not a bad album but I just feel it could have been so much better.
Ear piercing Yngwie!! November 1, 2008 Another Yngwie album, I've been play this for over 2 weeks now and I think that I've consumed it! Tracks like, Death dealer and Capricci di Diablo are sufficient to put you in Hospital! The guitar playing is very inspired and it's all there with the eyes wide shut and great drumming from Patrick!
Yes I know, the same riffs and licks etc, but I love it and he does it like no one else, musically this one is probably the best Yngwie's to date and when I buy an Yngwie's Cd I do wanna hear Yngwie!
The missing star is for the production, not so good Attack, Unleash, or Seventh sign and Odissey were way much better produced) I'm really sorry to say this but the 5k are ear piercing (hellooo?)..Imported in to my iTune re-adjusted put it back on the ipod and now I can blaste it in the car again, shame for that.
There are not many great guitar album out there so let's treasure the one we find ( If you want See my other reviews/recomandations)Fundamental Darkness
Perpetual burn is one of them. After all the question is: Would I buy this album again? Oh, absolutely.
