Not a great gig March 14, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Having been a Melanie fan for a long time, and having Melanies Live album 'Live at Margies Birthday party'( you know the old one with her sat on a stage on the cover) as one of my all time faveourite albums, I sent for this to get a fix of different versions and new tracks. It was a bargain, I'm not saying it wasn't, and Melanie at her best is underated and can be fantastic, but this is a bit pedestrian. It does have a few decent versions , and can chug along ok, but its not excellent and I dont want to waste my life playing this when i could be playing 'Born to Be' , 'Gather Me' etc.Never does it ( the album being reviewed) really move you, and thats what Melanies brand of folk music should do. Get 'Gather Me' or the 1970 live album, or even her latest studio stuff, but this is just a bit dull.
Loved it.... May 28, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I brought this having been only a passing fan of Melanie and then only from the 70's. I loved the album and it has never been far from my playlist. The sound quality is superb and I think the re-workings work very well. There are a lot of Melanie compilations but if you have not got any, get this, loved it.
This album made me weep July 1, 2005 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
If you remember the original Melanie hits, the clear and simple performances, avoid this. The performance ranges from inaudible to strident, there are pointless vocal embellishments which are not carried off, the vocals wander along at a totally different timing to the tune....I gave up after listening to about 30 percent of each of the first 6 tracks, dipped into the others to find them almost all the same. OK, so she`s bored with the old faithfuls, but why murder them? Sorry, Melanie, but I regretted buying this
