Live Again December 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Recorded live with the Silverados in Denver, 1975, Gene Clark was re-defining his direction after falling out with David Geffen at Asylum Records. "No Other" was Gene's masterpiece but Geffen was displeased that the $100,000 budget that he'd given him had produced an album with only eight tracks and withdrew support for it. Another set back in the tragic life of the inspired, but flawed, godfather of country rock.
So with Duke Bardwell, fresh from Elvis Presley's band, on bass and banjo and Roger White on electric and acoustic guitar he drove off in an ancient Dodge to play clubs and honky tonks across America: a far cry from those halcyon days with the Byrds.
Clark's songs are minor key triumphs and with the Silverados he produced a country inflected style of roots music with three part harmonies and his driving 12 string guitar.
The show included two classic songs from his days with the Byrds, "Here Without You" and "Set You Free This Time" confirming his status as one of the few songwriters who can stand comparison with Dylan. Gene and the Silverados pared things down to simple yet moving readings of some of his best loved songs and 36 years on we are privileged to hear them again.
Quite wonderful - and more than a bit poignant August 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Okay, it's not audiophile recording quality and yes from time to time he drives his voice to where it really should not be - but NONE of that matters! It's a sad but beautiful experience. A life unfulfilled - and played out in front of a tiny audience. Buy it while you still can. I suspect this is a limited release.
Official bootleg June 21, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
To make it clear, the music on this CD is great, although the recording definitely isn't. It is the late show from Ebbet's Field, Denver, February 19, and both show were included on many bootleg in the past, this particular disc is the exact replica of "Aircraft & More". Unfortunately, the sound is still muddy, so I am not sure that there were any remastering done on this. Still, the music is worth having it.
