Quark, Strangeness & More Compilations December 5, 2008 Hawkwind compilations have almost all been hit-and-miss affairs with the exception of the very first - Roadhawks in 1976. The EMI 3 disc set - Epoch Eclipse was good but like the similar 4 disc set from Griffin - 25 Years On, it started off well but failed toward the end as the material chosen to represent "latter day" Hawkwind could have been much better. This compilation which covers 1985-1997, alongside Spirit Of The Age which covers 1976-1984, has a much better selection of tracks. Neither this nor it's companion should really be considered "best ofs" but more excellent introductions to the years covered and also as an introduction to the entire catalogue from this period being re-released by Esoteric next year. January sees the re-release of Hawklords, Astounding Sounds, Electric Teepee and Live Chronicles, all with a wealth of carefully selected bonus material (with the exception of Electric Teepee) and all remastered from the original tapes. Esoteric really have done a grand job as these compilations prove, with a much superior sound to the originals. So I wouldn't recommend forking out loads of cash on ePay or buying the bootleg Rock Fever titles which the band don't get any money from. I won't go into the tracklisting here as Amazon have it listed. There are several alternate versions of tracks on both compilations as well as several hard to find tracks. I personally may have chosen a slightly different tracklist were these to be "best ofs" but that is always the case with compilations and as I stated earlier this isn't really a "best of" as such. Excellent booklets are included with both sets and the overall packaging is pretty smart. I've been playing these to death in the car. Just a pity Warrior On The Edge Of Time (it's from 1975 and wasn't re-released by EMI like all the other United Artists material) isn't going to be included in the re-releases. Oh and the band are touring right now as well (December 2008) and played a great gig in Glasgow last night! Five stars on the whole for a great compilation!
