5 out of 5 stars This album is a classic how can any maiden fan not like this?   June 21, 2008
I was so surprised when i found out that in fact alot of maiden fans dont like this, whats not to like? Its filled with Iron Maiden classics, I personaly love this album (though i do love all Iron Maiden albums). This album has classics like The Apparition (why does noone like this song is beyond me), Childhoods End, Afraid to Shoot Stranggers wait what the hell am i doing all this album is a classic how can you not like this album. People even say The X Factor & Virtual XI is better then this, dont get me wrong they're awesome album but compared to this album it just doesn come close to this album. This album has great lyrics, great vocals by dickinson (duh), great solos & riffs & awesome drumming by nicko. Fair enough maiden fans having a slight problem with the departure of the awesome guitarist Adrian Smith but this album is a classic, In my opinion this album doesnt have a filler song on it it's all killer. Though my favourite would probably be The Apparition ( which is strangely underrated). This is a wicked place to start off with Iron Maiden. UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Album that ended an era   April 22, 2008
When Iron Miaden have passed into the history books, they'll be remembered for albums such as "Number of the Beast", "Piece of Mind", "Powerslave" and "Seventh Son....".

Its hard to see why this album has been so poorly recieved by many fans. What needs to be taken into account is that times were changing in 1992, and classic Heavy Metal as it was known was being surpassed by grunge, and the Maidens simply moved with the times. That is the mark of a true band.

There are some classic tracks on here, especially "Afraid To Shoot Strangers" and "Wsting Love". The instant standout here is of course "Fear of the Dark". But many other good songs are overlooked. "The Fugitive", is a Steve Harris mini-epic. It differs from "To Tame a Land" or "Mariner.....", but from the point of view from a musician (which I am)the changes in this song should recieve more attention, also the use of keyboards.

Granted, it has diabolical moments "The Apparition" is one of only 2 Maiden songs I've heard that make me cringe. And its sad to see that this album has become remembered for this reason. I suggest that people concentrate on the many good points of it, which give the album such credibility.

Also, I hasten to add that at least 80-90% of the songs are better than the not-really-worth-mentioning "Hooks In You" from the previous "No Prayer...." album. It makes me go beyind cringing, and by compairson any song on this album bar 2 beat it well and truly.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the rest   April 11, 2008
This is still a better than average album for most bands...but unfortunately Maiden are not most bands! There are two good songs on here, the first and the last ones. However, two good songs do not an album make! That said, it is better than some of their later works...which let's face it, isn't particularly difficult!

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars 'cause I'm feeling generous   December 12, 2007

'Pathetic' is the only word I can use to describe this album, track after track of tedium. this has to be contender for worst Maiden album along with X Factor. Should really be a 2.5 star album.

4 out of 5 stars Not their worst...   August 28, 2007
I must admit, I did put off buying this for a while due to the negativity I had read surrounding the album, but after purchasing and listening to the whole album I don't really see what the fuss is about.

The album features a well rounded line up of songs that display an improvement from the previous album and a sign of Maiden being back on form with songs like Afraid To Shoot Strangers, Judas Be My Guide and Fear of the Dark.

Bruce's vocals, although different are still as good as they were before and for songs like Be Quick Or Be Dead they blend in well with the tone of the track.

The departure of Adrian would obviously have some effect on the sound of the group but this album is far from being awful.

Better than No Prayer, just not as good as Seventh Son.
Four stars.

May I recommend visiting the Iron Maiden website if you are on the border line for purchasing it, as they offer track samples for each album.
