Amazon.co.uk Review As if answering the challenge of those who dismiss them as a cartoonish joke, Slipknot claim that Iowa is a statement of intent, a real heavy-metal album. As percussionist Shawn Crahan puts it: "We're able to cut into the wound, crawl inside, stitch it up ourselves and fester in the f***ing hurt". And right from the introductory shriek and grind "of (515)", you know they're deadly serious. Iowa is immediately intimidating in its unforgiving heaviness. Produced to cruel perfection by wonderboy Ross Robinson, it takes the best of Slayer as its starting-point and moves on. "People=Shit", "The Heretic Anthem" and "New Abortion" are relentless and wholly brutal. But this is no mere thrash. "Disasterpiece" features a weird, hypnotic riff, while "Left Behind" is like a duet between Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Slayer's Tom Araya. "Gently" (an old track here re-recorded) builds slowly from industrial atmospherics to a punishing explosion of noise, and the title track (also old and formerly known as "Killers Are Quiet") is a heavy metal "Midnight Rambler", deeply unsettling. Frontman Corey Taylor claims to have performed it naked and bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, and that's not hard to believe. The whole album, though masterfully constructed, is painfully raw and utterly compelling. --Dominic Wills

A brilliant album much better then their debut July 22, 2008 After buying their new album a couple of years ago, i decided to check out their first 2 albums. Their debut album quite frankly is boring it has 2 good songs on it the rest sounded this same. This album however is deffinetly better. The songs here differ from each other, and everything has improved. Best songs are My Plague, The Heretic Anthem & Iowa. This album is very heavy, but brutal? who knows. But the thing that pisses me off is people keep comparing Slipknot to Slayer that's just not right, Slayer are one of the greatest metal bands to hit the planet yeah slipknot are good their no slayer. So overall, indeed a great album much better then their debut. A great starting point for new slipknot fans.
American Import June 20, 2008 Warning: The Album cover is not the same. Instead you will get a US import which looks like a fake.

THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT SLIPKNOTS HEAVIEST ALBUM. THIS IS MY FAVEOURITE KNOT ALBUM PROBABLY BECAUSE ITS THE ALBUM I FIRST GOT IN2 THEM ON. OLDER FANS WILL PREFER THE SELF TITLED DEBUT WHICH ALSO AWESOME AND NEWER FANS MAY POSSILBLY LIKE VOLUME 3 THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES. ALL GREAT ALBUMS BUT TO ME THIS STICKS OUT. THE GRISLY INTRO (515) SETS THE ATMOSPHERE AND YOU CAN TELL YOU ARE GUNNA BE TAKEN TO HELL AND BACK JUST BY LISTENING TO THE VOICE IN (515) SCREECH DEEEEEEEEEEATH OVER AND OVER AGAIN. PEOPLE = **** IS THE PERFECT SLIPKNOT ALBUM OPENER. HEAVY AS A TON OF BRICKS WITH THE WORLDS HEAVIEST BLOKE JUMPING ON TOP OF THEM. DISASTERPEICE AND MY PLAGE ARE JUST AS GOOD WITH AWESOME DOWNTUNING FRETWORK FROM THE LADS (THERES TO MANY TO NAME). bUT IT IS SONGS LIKE EVERYTHING ENDS, LEFT BEHIND, AM I HATED, SKIN TICKET AND THE BESTR SLIPKNOT SONG EVER, THE HERETIC ANTHEM WITH ITS O SO MEMEROBAL CORUS "IF YOUR 555 IM A 666 WHATS IT LIKE TO BE A HERETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". THE ALBUM CLOSES WITH THE 15 MINUTE KNOT EPIC OF THE TITLE TRACK (IOWA). A BIT SLOW BUT BUT PURE GENIUS WHEN IT SPEEDS UP. BUY THIS IF YOU ARE JUST GETTING IN TO SLIPKNOT. IF YOUR ALREADY INTO THEM AND YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW. WHY HAVENT YOU GOT IT ALREADY. BUY IT MAGGOTS AND STAY SIC.

this is the 'darkest', heaviest album that they have released. very aggressive. my plague is not the best on there. check out heretic anthem, disaster piece, i am hated. very good album for anyone appreciating metal.
Not bad October 31, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
For me this album is just the link between Slipknot and Volume 3. Love most of the songs, but I think that the last two songs are too soft. I hoped that they would finish the album the same way they opened it with a crazy loud song, but i was disappointed by the song that was echoed by Cirlce in Volume 3, though Circle is better than the song 'Iowa', it's the only SlipKnoT song I don't like, i just can't get in2 it, no matter how many times i play it I just don't like it. Still though, an album that is definatly worth buying and keeping. Brilliant album from the best band ever.
