Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Having successfully fused music and politics from their start, inspiring both moshing and young minds in the process, Rage Against the Machine emerge in peak form with merely their third album in seven years. Guitarist Tom Morello is one of the most distinctive and innovative players of his era, and his foil, vocalist/lyricist Zack De La Rocha, is as unrelenting and inspiring as ever on The Battle of Los Angeles. Rage, whose past antics include performing naked with duct tape over their mouths to protest censorship, released Battle on Election Day in the US, but the politics of the group can be separated from the sounds. Indeed, the 45 minutes of mayhem heard here can be enjoyed solely as rousing aggro hip-hop rock. There's more variety found on Battle than on its predecessors, however. "Sleep Now In The Fire" is one of their most straight-ahead rock tunes, while the trippy guitar on "Calm Like A Bomb" is out there even for the adventurous Morello and "Born a Broken Man" serves up lovely musical interludes. Overall, the more finely honed Rage heard on Battle may not inspire a generation of young revolutionaries, but they still stir up more mutinous spirit than the rest of the current rock pack. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Free Radical Musings   August 24, 2007

Now while many say that Rages best record was the unstoppably furious debut, this is their true masterpiece. Its the sound of a more intelligent and focused band embracing raw experimental sounds. Now while the album is known for its stomping hits (Testify, Guerilla Radio and Sleep now in the fire) its actually on many of the hidden gems on this album that rage hits on to something. For example the exellent album tracks Born of a Broken Man, where rage fuse the time signatures of Led Zeppelin and the *Loud-Quiet* dynamics of many grunge and prog bands, coupled with Zachs poetry and Tom Morellos achingly sad riff produce one of the bands greatest songs. Theres also more quality stomping on Hip-Hoppers Calm Like a Bomb with more Space Ship noises from Tom Morello and a funky bassline from Timmy C and Mic Check which is virtually a Hip-Hop song gives a good opportunity for Zach to rock the Mic and some exellent DJ Scratching from Tom. While theres too many gems on this album to mention, any Rage against the machine fan or let alone fans of music should own this album. Awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Album 1 but good...   November 20, 2006

Let's face it - the first album was dela Rocha at his most vitriollic and angry best. The ONLY reason this album gets 4 stars from me is that it's not *quite* as good as the self titled album. Other than that this is a blindingly good album.

I got this in a twin pack with Renegades, but I have to be honest and say i've listened to this one much MUCH more. The tunes seem more grungy and rocky, wheeras Renegade seems a bit more beats and raps.

This album could only come second behind RATM but it's a cracking listen anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Rage at there peak   August 9, 2006

I would buy this album just from the front cover and the name. I think there awesome. And then i listened to the songs, and i was blown away. Its just so good. Just everything. Definetly worth the effort, even if you have to clean your room for 2 years for the money to buy this album, at least you can listen to musical perfection while you do it.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good as The first, but still great   June 10, 2006

Some great songs on here, not as many as 'Rage Against the Machine' but still some good stuff.

Particularly like 'Mic Check', unusual and innovative.

This album is excellent!
I could end the review here and now and just leave that one statement, but this album deserves more.

The Battle Of Los Angeles is, in my opinion, Rage's best album. It contains classic tracks such as 'Guerilla Radio' and 'Testify'. As always the album is loaded with Morello's killer riffs as on the previously listed tracks and many others like my personal favourites 'Maria' and 'Voice Of The Voiceless'. The entire album is very listenable and holds up well after the first few listens.

If like any of the other RATM songs or albums this is by far the best album and one that belongs in every record collection!
