A Genuine Slice Of Real Classic Punk!!!!! October 5, 2008 This album is as iconic as the band that recorded it. A true punk classic - it is music from the streets - music from the gutter -this is what real punk was, totally no frills music and image. No fancy production and wardrobe like other bands of the time, this group where real and the album reflects this. All the songs are blistering corkers, apart from 'i wanna be your boyfriend', which ive always thought was a bit soppy and poppy, but over the years it has grew on me and is to me an essential track on the album. Songs like 'i dont wanna walk around with you' and the way it fuses into the ending track 'today your love tomorrow the world' is pure class. 'Now i wanna sniff some glue', 'judy is a punk' and especially '53rd and 3rd' still send tingles down my spine. I'm in my 40's now, and this is one of my all time favourite desert island discs. If you want a piece of real punk rock history- then this is it!!

Enough has been said about the impact of this band and their contemporaries playing at CBGBs, such as Blondie and Television. It's popularly supposed that the fun and excitement generated by The Ramones' stripped down pop was needed to flush away the pretence of prog and hard rock and give music back to 'the kids on the streets.' Actually, it didn't and the main reason to be thankful for it was to give us an alternative. Most of the people I knew who liked punk rock continued to listen to the so-called dinosaurs as well. Even so, you can trace the music of most indie bands from 1976 to the present back to this stuff. Considering The Ramones' musical limitations, the repetitive drum patterns, the d-u-m-b vocals and the bar chords, it's remarkable that they've been unsurpassed in this field.
'Blitzkrieg Bop' is one of the best pop singles of any decade and 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' suggests what The Searchers might have sounded like had they been a punk band. There are no lame tracks here;it's all buzzing guitar, crashing cymbals and no padding. 'Havana Affair' is imaginative and '53rd & 3rd' evocative. I agree with the reviewer who says that the repetitive nature of the tracks lends a sameness to the album at times, but the brevity of each item compensates for that. There will always be debate too about some of the lyrics, which allow a wide range of interpretations. The violence of 'Loudmouth' and the Nazi references of 'Today Your Love...' are the most pointed examples.
'Ramones' was artistically very influential, though not so commercially; The Sex Pistols finished the job. Best of all, though, this album is a blast.
A Vital, Ferocious, Essential Record October 28, 2005 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This album captures perhaps the most fierce, controlled burst of aggression ever recorded.
The Ramones were a primary inspiration of British late `70s punk, and one listen to this ferocious debut confirms what the likes of the Sex Pistols were listening to in 1976. `Ramones' featured 14 of the most basic of tunes - all performed with limited musical virtuosity but absolute zeal - and slyly dumb/clever lyrics about boredom, casual violence and sniffing glue, all crammed into less than half an hour. The idea was if you don't like a track don't worry - there will be another one along in a minute.
But the Ramones' adherence to a limited (yet vital) musical stew meant that, for them, the law of diminishing returns set in incredibly quickly: around 8 minutes into their debut album, in fact. But in its first four songs, the album gives all the Ramones you could ever need. There's the short fast one (`Blitzkrieg Bop'); the short, slow one (`Beat On The Brat'); the really short, really fast one (`Judy Is A Punk'); and the short soppy one (`I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend').
While the remaining songs are still undoubtedly great, by the end of the album it is already clear that their `back to basics' approach created a musical straitjacket from which they (and all other punks) would struggle to escape. While there are many other fine Ramones records, you can hear all you need here.
The additional eight tracks in this reissued edition add little to the record - with the original songs already pretty much stripped bare anyway, a `demo' version will always sound like finished Ramones product.
But these are petty complaints. Only The Jesus and Mary Chain's `Psychocandy' betters this in terms of its sustained attack on the listener. An essential record.
The Ramones October 2, 2005 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Essential listening! if you buy any album in the next year and you don't already have this (where have you been!) buy it as this is a classic. The Ramones are the godfathers of punk and this album probably encouraged a whole generation of bands to give it a go. The album does sound a bit like an angry wasp trying to explode and the Ramones rip through a bunch of great songs from the anthem Blitzkreig Bop to true love songs like Chainsaw and I wanna be your Boyfriend. Love this album it is simply great. Rest in peace Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee you can be proud of this. I have to say this is probably my favourite and most listened to album of all time.
Noise freaks wont like this June 1, 2005 1 out of 20 found this review helpful
Compared to their live performances this is debut studio album is something of a dissapointment. The Ramones were excellent live playing fantastic tuneful bursts of total noise. Somehow they couldn't transfer the power and energy of their live performances to the studio. This album does not do them justice. It is weak and slow compared to their far superior live albums. I would say skip this, unless you not into hardcore thrash and prefer slower pop punk. But for me and other noise lovers only their live albums will do. Get It's Alive, Live at the New York Palladium or Loco Live to hear the Ramones at their best.
