Love & Hate in Equal Measures April 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like a lot of Neil Diamond albums of this period, you get the good and the bad in the same package. Having said that I have a certain fondness for some of the material on this disc. Not a classic CD by any means, but there are moments when he hits just the right spot.
The first track "If there were no dreams" is good without being outstanding. The second "Mountains of Love" is overblown sentimental hype.
It's when we get to the third track that things really look up. "Don't turn around" is very good, with just the right amount of emotion, without killing it. "Someone who believes in you" is one of my favourites. Great tune and lyrics that suggest that having been through the whole music stardom, he sings from his own personal experiences. "When you miss you're love" is also very good indeed.
"Fortune of the night", "Wish everything was alright", "The Way", "Sweet L.A. days", "All I really need is you" and "Lonely Lady #17" are nothing but very poor album fillers.
"One hand, One Heart" is a great cover version by Diamond, showing that he still has the ability to do so when he tries. The duet with Kim Carnes on "Hooked" is brilliant. One of the best things he wrote on the album. One thing that Diamond has always succeeded in doing is pick the right song and female to duet with when collaborating on certain tracks.
The final two tracks "I feel you" and "Common Ground" are both excellent. Which means that half of the CD is well worth it while the other half you have to put up with?
If this had been done in the old days of vinyl when space was limited, Diamond could have put out a first rate album............if he'd chosen the right tracks. But then again, it's only my opinion. If you read my other Diamond reviews, you'll either be the sort of fan that's in my camp................or a die hard fan whereby he can't do any wrong. In which case, you'll not be in the slightest bit interested in reading my opinions anyway!
