AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.. BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES September 11, 2008 I think many people who heard this around 78/79/80/81 -it stirs nostalgic memories or student life, NWOBHM, first flat etc.
I remember so vividly playing along with Schenkers unbelievable guitar on my lap after a few beers and the memory never fades.
You don't need me to tell you this is the, repeat the pinnacle of UFO that will never be surpassed. It's also the album that is up there amongst the top 5 all time metal/Heavey Rock ,live albums.
The whole thing works majestically, it's heavy, it's loose it's amazing songs, brilliant guitars, superb vocals and one mega atmosphere.
Listen, think back and enjoy - if it hits the nostalgic button, let a tear flow - it's amazing.
Simply awesome September 3, 2008 Rediscovered recently via download. I have the original vinyl and it is, quite simply, the greatest live hard rock album you will ever hear. raw yet restrained melodic song after song. Schenker is unbelievable; the rhythm of Way and Parker faultless, others have commented on Mogg's vocals but don't underestimate the keyboard of Paul Raymond, which adds so much melody and effect (Love to Love being a great example). This is a band at their peak.
not enough stars available August 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The 'live' album concept appears to have died out, but this is simply the best live recording ever committed to vinyl (and on to cd) bar none.
This simply has it all, a great seasoned rock band, a young and talented guitarist in his prime (superlatives used to describe Michael Schenker such as 'on fire' and 'blistering solos' are perfectly justified here) all topped off with the effortlessly restrained vocals of Phil Mogg. Oh, and some great timeless songs, all of which are carefully structured and feature numerous tempo changes, performed here with aplomb.
This record influenced scores of great rock outfits (I read that Slash cites this as his favourite album), and remains as listenable today as it did back in 1979.
I have the original double LP, original cd and now this new cd version, the 2 new tracks and running order restored here are as it would have been if cd existed back then! I now keep the new cd in the car and dive in at track 3 'Let it Roll', which sounds great as an opener.
If you have any interest in rock and have not heard this record do yourself a massive favour and get it now. Then if you get a chance see UFO live as they still rock (hard).
When I last saw them in a small venue in Bristol around 1992, I was lucky enough to be leaning on the monitors 3 feet away from Phil Mogg and Pete Way! I thought then they were the best live band I had ever seen and still do, with or without Schenker.
Five Star Only! July 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The original was perfection. This gets just the five stars! I preferred the original even though the running order was re-arranged to fit onto vinyl. The bonus tracks also detract from rather than add to this masterpiece. Still.... had to have them both!
superb re-issue June 10, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Strangers in the night by UFO ensured they had a special place alongside those like Thin Lizzy before them in terms of producing superb live albums capturing a band at their best of which couldn't be bettered!
This re-issue deserves 5 stars as the 2008 remasters have done little to diminish the quality of this album considering "Doctor Doctor" that was remastered on the new best of sounds a lot cleaner and crisper than the previous originaly released version of this album.
