Some More Thoughts November 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I appreciate Johnny Chandler's views on why and how this release was mastered but, as I too was disappointed with the quality of a so-called "official" release, I would like to point out another option which could have been taken.
In 1982 there was a CD released in the US called In The Name of Love which compiled songs from the Twins' first two albums. There were 8 titles from Set included on this release. Surely even a 16 bit transfer from this CD of the tracks in question for this new release would have been preferable to a vinyl to CD mastering. To master the album version of the song In The Name of Love from vinyl is even more ludicrous when you consider it is still readily available on the CD of the Ghostbusters soundtrack.
It is a real shame that these highly underrated albums have not been given the respect they deserve. A little more research and thought would have gone a long way.
Another Excellent Product from Edsel November 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a casual Thompson Twins fan that had never heard this material before, I have to say that it sounds excellent. I own every CD that Edsel has remastered and I think they have done a phenomenal job. I am a huge fan of New Order and if you want to hear what really bad mastering sounds like, then take a listen to those new remasters. Most of the bonus material were remastered from vinyl as well however you can hear pops and clicks and channel drops, etc. Edsel, IMO have done a wonderful job of bringing non existent (especially to someone in the US) Thompson Twins music to the masses with great love. I am listening to SET right now with Bose Noise Canceling headphones and I cannot imagine what anyone else could ask for.
Thompson Twins - A Product of - THE FACTS October 30, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
There have been a variety of remarks made relating to this latest Demon Edsel release of Thompson Twins material and in particular a scathing review from a one-time supplier to the company. I hope the following will address a great many of the points raised.
Unfortunately beyond those for the original albums, very few tapes from this period of the Thompson Twins career are known to exist. This situation has no doubt been brought about by the fact that the recordings were originally made independently, then subsequently purchased by Arista who later merged with BMG. They then merged with Sony (no doubt meaning yet more rejigging of tape archives and probably more confusion).
The lack of tapes gave us no option but to master from original vinyl copies for some tracks. Mastering was done at a highly respected UK mastering house used by Page and Plant, The Kaiser Chiefs and Paul Weller amongst others.
The only tape boxes shown in the package are for the tapes that were available and that we baked and were then remastered from for this release. We included pictures of the boxes because we feel fans like to see engineer credits, dates, places and so on. To say we didn't remaster from original tapes to save money as some have suggested is totally incorrect. We make every effort to ensure that the sound quality is the best it can be given the tools at our disposal for any particular project.
In response to the suggestion that some bootlegs are of better quality I beg to differ and would also like to point out that the artists, writers and producers will all be paid from our reissues unlike the bootlegs.
In an ideal world all tapes would have been available but history is littered with imperfect situations and we here at Demon would rather this music was available on CD legally than not at all albeit with some imperfections.
TERRIBLE REMASTERING. AVOID!!! October 25, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
This has to be one of the WORST CD mastering jobs ever! The only things that are from masters are the album tracks for "A Product Of" and the "In The Name Of Love" unreleased mix. Everything else is unmistakably awful quality vinyl transfers. And contrary to what the previous review states, the music is completely damaged from auto surface noise reduction. The opening notes of "In The Name Of Love" album version displays damage to the synth sounds, and the initial drumbeats bounce from left to right, and are chewed up terribly. The ironic insult to this is that pictures of the various master tape boxes are scattered throughout the booklet, as well as on the inside of the back insert, though clearly most were not utilized. I can only assume Edsel refused to pay the cost have the tapes baked/restored for usability. This process is so simple too. The tapes are to be put into a convection oven at 130 degrees for about 5 hours, then another 5 hours for a gradual cool down. The tapes should be usable for anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months before needing another bake. Was that too much for Edsel? I will part with this CD and spread the word. There have been MUCH higher quality "Fan Made" CD's floating around for years.
UPDATE: As seen mentioned in a recent submission from a Demon Music associate, there is a claim that all available masters were used. As I pointed out, the masters for the "Set" album and the "Runaway" single are clearly displayed in the booklet and back insert, yet they are obviously not used at all. What's the excuse for that? The masters were right there!
Three Cheers For Edsel...hip hip.... October 25, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
By diggedy they've done it again! If any label decides to re-release archive material and they need a template of how it should be done then they could do worse than look at this years TT releases from Edsel. They've been fantastic.
Like the other reviewer, I'm not a big fan of "Future Days" as it showed a remarkable decline in their songwriting, but being a fan, I still bought it.
These two albums will come as a little bit of a shock for all those who only really know their poppy "We Are Detective" phase. Some of these tracks are raw and even verge on new wave.
I still think both releases, despite being nearly 30 years old, sound pretty good and although it's been a while since I've played either of these two albums, it was almost like being reaquainted with an old friend.
The breadth of extra tracks is superb, from early singles to b-sides and extended mixes and for this price, it's a steal.
As for the mastering, well I've only got human ears, and it sounds OK to me.
Edsel rules, etc.
