Amazon.co.uk Review
Although there have been countless compilations over the decades, The Very Best of the Jacksons could well be the most definitive. Split across two discs, disc one primarily features the early Mowtown days and the second, mainly their hits as the Jacksons (as opposed to Jackson 5) released on Epic. Often overshadowed by Michael's subsequent success as a solo artist, this anthology demonstrates why the Jacksons' perfect balance of pop and soul has endured when compared to one-time peers such as the Osmonds. The irresistible funk of "ABC" and "I Want You Back" are classics of the period as are the incredible ballads "Got to Be There" and little Michael's ode to a loveable rodent, "Ben". Highlights of disc two are predominantly from their massive albums Destiny and Triumph, released in the late 1970s, early 1980s; "Can You Feel it", "Blame it on the Boogie" and "Shake Your Body" to name but three.

It was around this time that Michael began his adult solo career and The Very Best of the Jacksons appropriately ends with a live version of "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" from MJ's Off the Wall. Michael may have gone on to eclipse his family but there can be little dispute that the Jacksons are one of the most important musical dynasties ever. --Georgina Collins

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation   January 9, 2006

When The Jackson 5 started out, they literally fired out the hits in rapid succession.
All of these favourites from the Motown years are here on Disc 1. I’ll Be There is a particularly outstanding track. Also here is early solo material from Michael, including the sublime Got To Be There
On Disc 2 they have transformed into the Jacksons and this covers their recordings for the Epic label. By this stage their music had become very ‘Disco-fied’. Less of the tracks on Disc 2 were actual hits but this is still a comprehensive collection of their out put from this era. Best of the later tracks are Can you Feel It- a fantastic upbeat celebrational disco hymn, and also State Of Shock which sees Michael in a duet with Mick Jagger in raw, funky style.
This is the most complete collection from The Jackson 5/Jacksons and well worth having.
Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars A compilation that misses the point!   February 7, 2005

A golden opportunity to get all the hits across 2 discs documenting the force that was the Jackson's coupled with the rise of the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Unfortunatly one too many deals were done in the record industry to bring this compilation to fruition. The net result is an excellent overview of the motown days and an absolute travesty of the CBS/disco era Jacksons. Full length versions of the songs are sacrificed for "additional" tracks which demission the overall compliation significantly. Buy the US version from the "essential" series to get the CBS/disco full length tracks and avoid this poor UK release.

5 out of 5 stars A part of History   July 17, 2004

The Jacksons are my greatest ever band - even though many are more famous. But if you listen to some of the tracks, you will undersand why I am such abig fan of them.

Forget about Michael, this is a team effort, with brothers of a huge family making records that feel fresh even now. My favourites are Show you the way to go, State of Shock, Blame it on the boogie and Can you feel it - all of which are on the second disc. But this is simply because their sound is far more modern. I want you back will always be remembered, aswell as ABC, and so many more on the first disc - for years to come.

There is also a live version of Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough, and two songs almost Michael-less that add to such a memorable selection from the Jacksons. This is a need for any music fan.

Superb!!! (from a teenage fan)

5 out of 5 stars Long Overdue and a Required Purchase   June 12, 2004

Only a couple of months ago, Sony issued "The Essential Jacksons" as part of its erratic tribute/greatest hits series. That was the first time the group's Epic (the label, though the adjective applies as well) output was ever anthologized on CD. This 2-disc set appears to be a major upgrade. Not only does it correct "Essential"'s glaring omission of "Torture" but includes most of not only the J5's, but also Michael's Motown solo hits. (I assume any further repackaging's of Jacko's solo hits at CBS--and you know eventually there will be several--will need to be a separate marketing event.)

I believe a few of the boys' Motown mid-level hits have been left off; also, Jermaine's early hit on the label ("Daddy's Home") has not been permitted to rub elbows with Michael's hits. But Motown has already put those tunes out about fifty times already; having the highlights of Jacksons' CBS years in one place is big news.

P.S.: (I'll never get to mention this anywhere else.) The third single from 1984's "Victory" was "Body." Maybe by this time this was released there was finally burnout over all things Jackson, because even though Michael did not sing lead on this, the song missed our Top 40 (yep, I'm a colonist). However, Jacksonmania was so out of control back then that the tune was programmed into a plastic wrist watch for children. So I'm in a store one day in '84, and this innocent little beeping melody, the words to which are roughly, "Girl I want your body, you know I need your body..." emanates from a six-year-old kid's watch. (I forgot how I knew he was six.) The effect was creepy, so I'm kind of glad "Body" is missing from the above track listing. P.P.S.: I suspect the watch is now going for fifty bucks on e-Bay.

*****
"It's a Jackson 5 Star!"
Boy/girl bands come and go but few go on to be remembered for capturing the worlds eye and inspiring for so long. From the clasic 'ABC' to the more recent 'Dancing Machine' and 'Can You Feel It!' you'll be sure to find these and many more greats all on one album. A talented group with a Genius lead singer who from the age of just 5 will be sure to get you on feet dancing and singing away in your living room.
Buy it and enjoy!
