Josh Rouse delivers! October 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This Cd is what it says "on the tin", although fans can most likely debate some of the choices. What you get is a great introduction to one of the greatest songwriters of his generation and a real chameleon artist. In a business where second discs are often substandard, this disc offers us seconds which could easily be released in their own right. The production quality throughout is fantastic, the playing sublime, the songs - miniature classics. If you've not encountered Josh Rouse, start now, you will not be disappointed. Oh yes, I would just add that the 1972 album is without a doubt a classic waiting to be fully discovered. One day, I'm sure, it will be recognised for what it is. Hopefully, this collection will speed that day along! Enjoy
Quite possibly the most underrated singer songwriter of his generation September 22, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Josh Rouse is a treasure. It's absolutley mind blowing that he isn't bigger or well known than he actually is. Maybe he likes to stay under the radar but he has a dedicated fanbase who adore and love his work.
This is a compilation of his work from the start to the completion of his 5 albums on Rykodisc and is a great introduction to a musician that really is in tune with his craft. I challenge anyone to not listen to this compilation and not appreciate its greatness. Its just too hard to pick a favourite song but this is a man who not only channels the great 60's/70's vibe but knows how to write great songs.
There is also some unheard gems not on any of the released albums, such as 'Sunshine', 'A Song To Help You Sleep' which is a must for any completist.
But don't stop here, check out his further albums on his 'Bedroom Classics' label. Since finishing up his 5 album deal he decamped to Spain and now continues to put out albums and EP's on his own terms, which are just as great. This is a man who lives life, and creates songs through his own experiences which come through in the music. He is also just as great live and worth catching if he comes to a city near you.
So, go and marvel and treat your ears to the Smooth Sounds Of Josh Rouse. Like his dedicated fanbase enjoy and spread the word...
