Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call "musical royalty". She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus, and appearances on his albums, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of this self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads. --C Wingbaps

5 out of 5 stars The Wainwright family strikes again   May 7, 2007

A prestigious musical family such as the Wainwrights may lead one to beleive that this album by Martha Wainwright- the sister of Rufus and the daughter of Louden- may just be a family pushed venture, which would sell purely on the Wainwright name alone.. However, Martha boldly asserts herself as the most interesting, cutting edge and talented female singer songwriter around in an album which rivals Gemma Hayes - Night On my side and her own brother's self titles album for the best debut albums by singer songwriters in the last twenty years. Distinctive enough to be Joni Mitchell and good enough to make lily allen look like that girl you knew in highschool who now has ten kids at the age of 20. She deserves far more credit than any of the ruffians who are among the top of the musican scene, I will not name any names as they don't deserve any credit.

4 out of 5 stars Martha my dear   May 20, 2006

Alternative Indie folky Martha has produced an album which in turn excites and relaxes. Some powerful compositions display raw emotion which is obviously drawn from living a life less ordinary.
Martha spins her compositions across the emotional spectrum and who are we to doubt her sincerity.

Strong as steel...soft as honey.

5 out of 5 stars a modern classic   April 30, 2006

A stunning album that returns to my CD player with the frequency of the tide, and each time I play it I marvel at its wonder.

The obvious comparison is with Mary Margaret O'Hara but I must be honest and say that this debut is even better than the seminal recording from the reclusive Ms O'Hara.

Oh, and Martha is far more palatable than her over-rated and sequinned brother. He is style over content. She really delivers the goods.

5 out of 5 stars this woman/girl nails some sentiment on this album!   January 31, 2006

whatever you think this album is going to be like forget it, it will just blow you away. have you ever heard a woman sing like a child one minute with vulnerability showing through. how does she do it? she sings like she's been locked in a tower all these years and someone's finally let her sing her thoughts on an album with beautiful guitar accompanying her. you can while away the day, fantasise about being in some parisian city then sing with her whilst you share the annoyance she has with work, love and growing up.
absolutely bl@@dy magical. best album i've heard in a long long time. inspirational.
