a man on a mission October 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For a man of sometimes dubious taste and a remarkable lack of irony - Mellencamp has written and performed some stunning songs. In my knowledge of popular(?) music you'll find nothing as unremittingly bleak and beautiful as this album, certainly not this side of Townes van Zandt anyway. The sound of a man who has already died and singing for himself on the other side. Extraordinary.
Perhaps his best work! September 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been a big fan of Mellencamp since American Fool, but have felt he was falling short since Mr Happy, and probably the couple of albums before that. Some said Freedom Road was a return to form, but Life ... for me really hits the spot. This is the fine musician of Jubilee and Scarecrow, but older, stripped down, wiser? perhaps, but really firing on all cylinders. I've played nothing else in the car for a week and I'm still wanting nothing else. Its been a long time since a record got under my skin like this. Perhaps his best work. A couple of tracks aren't me, but with 14 on the album that's forgiveable.
Truly outstanding August 2, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
John Mellencamp is reported to have said of this album that "it's the best record I ever made", and it would be difficult to disagree. My personal favourites are 'Scarecrow' and 'Lonesome Jubileee' - I'm not sure if this is better, but it certainly runs them close.
Where 'Scarecrow' and 'Lonesome Jubilee' were rockers, however, this album might be called 'electric folk' or simply 'folk', as it's very acoustic. Some have compared this album to Dylan, but for me it's distinctive Mellencamp, at his most raw and gritty. His voice has never sounded better. It's a very dark and brooding album - death (and despair) get far more focus than life, love or freedom.
It's an album that grabs you at the first play, and makes you stop whatever else you might be doing and really LISTEN. And it gets better the more often you hear it. Heartfelt lyrics, beautifully performed songs, top-notch production quality, this album has the lot. Early to say, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it gain recognition as a classic album. Truly outstanding.
Life, Death, Love, Freedom = JM Classic July 20, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Following on from last years excellent Freedom Road, JM has teamed up with T Bone Burnett to produce a stripped down record with JM concentrating lyrically on the passing of the years. The result is a JM gem, T Bone has pulled back some of JM's anthemic tendencies and the record is a slow burner. No big chroruses or loud guitar, just poignant lyrics and restrained music orchestrated by T Bone. The DVD is audio only.
