I Know That Name - And so should many more November 8, 2008 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I Know That Name finds Paul Carrack finally getting back to writing and recording, largely his own material. The previous 3 albums being last year's 'Old, New Borrowed and Blue' compilation, 'The Story So Far' (2006 Greatest Hits) and 2005's Winter Wonderland (Christmas songs). The last album of new Carrack songs was 2003's 'It Ain't Over', so it's well overdue and I'm pleased to say it's been well worth the wait... For me, this is his best album since 'Satisfy My Soul' (2000).
I mentioned that this is 'largely' his own material; the only exception being the first track 'Ain't No Love...' the Bobby Bland track (also covered by Whitesnake) and Paul's most successful UK single in a long, long time. There are 3 tracks co-written with his old Squeeze pal, Chris Difford - 'Stay Awake', 'Love Is Thicker Than Water' (a fine duet with Sam Moore of Sam & Dave) and 'Am I In That Dream?'
The album has a real warmth to it and yet sounds bigger than recent releases. This could be due to the fact that he's moved out of his home recording studio and recorded partly in Nashville. But he still plays pretty much all the instruments (except the brass) on the majority of the songs.
'I Don't Want To Hear Any More' (the second single) was covered by the Eagles on their 2007 release 'Long Road Out Of Eden' and band members Don Henley and Timothy B Schmidt repay the debt by providing backing vocals on Paul's version. 'It Ain't Easy' is classic Carrack, warm, soulful vocals set against his signature organ backdrop. 'No Doubt About It' (scheduled to be the third release) is more up-tempo, driven along by Paul's horn section and recalling classic seventies soul. 'I Don't Want Your Love...' is a ballad that finds Paul playing everything and to great effect; it's probably my favourite track on the album. Another ballad 'If I Didn't Love You' is also worth a mention; my other favourite.
There are 2 tracks that I could live without - the reggae stylings of 'Just 4 Tonite' and 'Eyes Of Blue' (the original version is one of my all time favourites) don't work so well for me.
The final track brings classic Bacharach to mind via a great horn arrangement and is a perfect way to bring to a close this most welcome addition to the Carrack catalogue.
If you don't yet 'know that name', this might be a perfect way to get familiar. It more than merits a listen.
