Fantastic intro & retrospective of a truely original artist! March 31, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Danielle Dax, is truely a hidden gem. Multi-talented,multi-instrumetalist, actor (she's the wolf girl in Angela Carter's 'Company of Wolves')and an interiors designer to boot!. Danielle wrote all the lyrics and music, and utilising a diverse eqlectic range of sounds, feels and numerous instruments. She and David Knight are both exceptionally skilled and daring musical and artistic innovators, who created a unique sound. Along with obviously the vocals, Danielle Dax, also plays guitars, keyboards, bass, flute, sitar, kalimba, percussion, and drone guitar!! Whereas David Knight expresses himself with guitars, keyboards,Tapes,Percussionand the drone guitar! This exellent Album contains almost all of the equally brilliant "Inky Bloaters" Cd, with the singular exception of 'Born to be Bad'. Some of the more commercial tracks released as singles are included, such as 'Cat-House','White-knucle ride/ Whistling for his love', 'Yummer Yummer Man / Bad Miss 'M'/Fizzing Human Bomb'. Curiously the Cd version has 19 tracks, compared to 12 on the vinyl version. Sadly it only includes one track off Danielle Dax's bizarrely crackers but truely original debut solo album "pop Eyes"; the spookily eery opener 'Bed Caves', but does redeem itself with two stonking tracks off the ultra rare EP "Jesus Egg That Wept" 'Hammerheads' and 'Pariah'. The other extra tracks on this cd version, comprise the aformentioned wacked-out trippy b-side 'House-Cat',and three further tracks from the "Inky Bloaters" album; the hypnotic meanderings of 'Sleep Has no Property' and "Where the Flies are' and finally the drole deadpan chunkings of 'Funtime'. In summery the full track list is: Cat-house(3.38),Big Hollow Man(4.45),White Knuckle Ride(2.51),When I was Young(3.47), Yummer Yummer Man(3.22),Fizzing Human Bomb(3.40), Whistling for his Love(3.27),Flashback(4.18),Inky Bloaters(3.27),Brimstone in a barren land(4.25)Bad Miss'M'(2.42),Touch piggy's eyes(4.07),House-cat(3.29),Bed Caves(3.05),Sleep Has No Property(4.29),Hammerheads(3.11),Pariah(3.43),Where the Flies Are(3.13),& Funtime(3.18). All lyrics are included. And the cover art is amazing as usual, by the talented and imaginative Holly Warburton. A must buy for any Dax fans out there, but many would be very pleasently surprised if they took the plunge.
