Good omens! December 27, 2008 After Raven's death last year, God rest his soul, I feared it might be the end of my favourite band, but gladly, none of that...
Instead, the original lineup reconvened after nigh TWENTY SIX years! A huge welcome back to Big Paul and Youth. As Jaz reminds us on the sleeve notes, KJ's founder members are all approaching fifty but according to this document, they appear to have lost none of their firepower at all. Bloodsport is bursting out of my speakers right now and it's an utterly visceral and beautiful thing. It's a classic set on here and the renditions are awesome.
Duendes is a gem of a recording. It's like a fat live mix that makes your stereo sound like a towering PA at full tilt, conjuring the band in the middle of your living room. Even the uninitiated could do a lot worse than this as a first bite, it's a first class collection. The vintage single Are You Receiving just sounds fantastic and has me grinning from ear to ear.
Duendes is a taster for live shows in 2008 and there's also some promise of a new studio album if the sleeve notes are anything to go by. On this kind of form, those are both great prospects. Will 2009 be the year that everyone finally begins to get The Joke? We live in hope...
Classic KJ December 22, 2008 Well, I just go through the first listening of this one and can heartily recommend it. It's a sampling of classic KJ tracks, mostly ones that they have played on their 2008/2009 tour. The previous reviewer describes the quality as "a bit raw" which doesn't really do them justice. They sound more like live recordings but without the audience, so if you DID miss the recent tour, this should make up for it in some way (but not entirely - the London gigs were awesome!).
The listing is impeccable. Requiem is stately, Tension is tense, Whiteout frantic, Pssyche psychotic, and Pandemonium is... well... demonic. The one track I'd take issue with is Love Like Blood, which (on the first pass at least) sounds pretty much like all the previous versions of this superb song - superb indeed, but offering nothing new. That one (minor) blip is why I didn't give the album six stars (what? haven't you found the secret "Sixth Star" button?) although it's also more than made up for by the raucous "Are You Receiving?" which is one of the best KJ tracks that I only have one version of (until now, that is).
Looking forward to the promised new album in January...
Well worth buying November 6, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The whole title and packaging of this CD looks unpromising (I mean "Spanish Sessions" ???). Don't let that put you off as it has nothing to do with Spain other than it was recorded there - this is a top-notch run through of some of their best tracks by the newly-reformed lineup. The mixes are a bit like session versions, ie a bit raw, but isn't that what we all want from KJ anyway ? They are loud, hard and relentless ! I can't see how any fan could be disappointed with this album; buy one and play it to teenage metal fans to show them what REAL hard sounds like.
