Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Iam elevated   October 31, 2008
For those who get tired of the pop treadmill and enjoy putting on the headphones and losing themselves in sonic delights, this wonderfully low-key offering from Peter Broderick will not disappoint.
The first of two solo albums released this year (2008), 'Float' is a mainly instrumental work featuring delicate piano playing and muted orchestral swells and embelishments. It is incredibly elevating and far more than background music. An American living in Denmark, it captures a genuine sense of wonder of the dramatic Scandinavian landscapes.
To release one good album in a 12-month period is as much as most could ask for, but to release two is quite remarkable ('Home' is the second record and, while similarly muted, has layered vocals and sparse acoustica as its main focus).
Broderick is one of those quiet and rare talents who will hopefully continue to grow and delight away from the mainstream glare. Spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Floating.   July 4, 2008

Peter Broderick's is the first release after an extended hiatus of the excellent Manchester based Type records. Type's standard is always very high and with Float, they may have just set the bar even higher.

Broderick is a classical pianist and Float definitely sounds like the work of one. However, the music here is focused around mood, atmosphere and texture rather than virtuoso playing; the sum of the parts rather than pushing the lead instrument to the fore.

Supposedly all the piano pieces for the album were written beforehand and the rest of the instrumentation was improvised on the fly in the studio. If the thought comes into your head that it may sound rushed or amateurish because of this you'd be mistaken. Broderick's compositions are beautiful.
His playing is not complex, it's quite measured and sparse but each note and each chord is perfect; there are no extra notes needed. The strings, and other instrumentation used to augment the piano are incredibly tastefully done and theres never a moment where you think something sounds out of place or something could be added.
It's a fairly eclectic album for it's kind too. The tracks range from 1min to 7.5mins and some are simply piano and strings and some have softly sung vocals or drums.

It's easy to relegate Float as background music too. I did for the first few listens until I had it on in my headphones on the tram into town. It took on a whole new significance for me; listening to this gorgeous album watching various suburban landscapes roll past the window as moods and textures subtly shifted in my headphones.
A highly recommended purchase indeed. This will be high up by best of 2008 list.
