5 out of 5 stars Joni's Jazz   December 30, 2007
I've always loved this CD. Joni is at a plateau in her career here, having moved from folky singer/songwriter to Jazz influenced singer. She probably started slipping a bit after this. Her voice here is perfect, and her phrasing is as always truly unique.

Favourite track for me is "In France they Kiss on Main Street". Pat Methany plays wonderful guitar and the band are really powerful. However 'Coyote' 'Hejira' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' are all great in there own ways.

The band is phenomenal, Michael Brecker is on Sax, Jaco Pastorius Bass, together with Lyle Mays on Keyboards and Don Alias on drums. This is a one-off Jazz super-group that only ever worked together for this tour, and never recorded in the studio as a unit.

If you like Joni Mitchell's Jazz side this is an essential purchase and you can buy the DVD of this as well, which is well worth getting.

I thought I was replacing a much loved but long lost vinyl album, but three tracks do not appear on this single CD edition: Black Crow(a particular favourite), Don's Solo and Free Man in Paris.
Better go for the remastered version.

5 out of 5 stars Joni at her best!   February 7, 2006

I first bought this album on double vinyl in 1984, the DJ of night train on RTE (Irish radio) were playing Refuge of the roads and talking about Shadows and light. I bought it the next day, and played it until I almost wore it through. This album captures the gorgeous intimacy of a small club, though I understand it was recorded live in quite a big location. The music is utterley romantic, and inspiring. If your a bass player like me, this is Jaco Pastorius as has already been said on here "at the top of his game". I adore the incredibly vocal textures of Jacos sound in this album, it also makes you want to move your playing up several nothches when you hear how fluid and complex his bass lines are.
Shadows and light is a great way to hear Jonis work, the studio albums are peices of history, they are national geographic in music, sensitive portraits to proud eras, and personalities. Its music that surrounds you like a lullably. A simple example is that when listening to the live album, apart from the ends of songs, or some openings, where the audience are applauding, there is total silence, as if the audience are mesmerised by what they are hearing, and dont dare make a sound just incase they miss somthing.
IF you buy Shadows and Light you wont be dissappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Underated...but not perfect   March 1, 2005

I too bought this album on vinyl and the unedited version, unavailable for many years in this country, is far superior to the single CD that I later bought.

I found this album a considerable introduction to jazz. I loved the early Joni - Both Sides Now and first live album - Miles of Isles - being particular favourites. But this album proved to be an education.

First here is the quality of the songs. The tracks from the Hejira album are particularly notable. Then there is the craftsman like band - Metheny, Brecker, Pastorios - surely one of the best touring bands.

However the real revelation is the quality of the guitar playing of Joni Mitchell herself. I am no expert on guitar technique but her style of playing is so suited to the songs.

Where Miles of Isles is good natures and a bit naïve, Shadows & Light is knowing and reflective. The version of Woodstock is a lament where earlier versions - on Ladies of the Canyon and Miles of Isles and hopeful.

The album is very good. Slightly marred by long indulgent solos. Would like a chance to see the film, though.

5 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to Joni   February 6, 2004

The double vinyl of this CD was my first encounter with Joni Mitchell, and I was instantly captured. I've lain on the sofa with the lights out listening to this album on repeat for so many evenings.

This is Joni Mitchell at her best, supported by non other than Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny, with long time collaborator Lyle Mays. Getting Joni, Jaco and Pat all on the same album is something in itself unmissable.

Slightly disappointingly, two songs were cut from the double vinyl to fit onto this CD, including the loss of Big Yellow Taxi.

However, you still get exquisite passion on every track. For me, Amelia followed by Pat's Solo is the climax — of this album, and perhaps of her entire career. Joni Mitchell finds a parallel to her own life in Amelia Earhardt, and the lyrics are both personal and striking (the sound of flying engines - is a sound so wild and blue - it scrambles time and seasons - if it gets through to you - then your becomes a travelogue... and ... I guess I've never really loved - I guess that is the truth - I've spent my whole life - at icy altitudes...).
Following this straight through, we experience one of Pat Metheny's finest moments on guitar.
