Great memories November 26, 2008 Just a perfect reprise of some of Jackson Browne's best work. His recent albums may be suffering the usual tail-off of all artists, but his performance on these tracks cannot be faulted. The spoken intros just make you smile while the pared down presentations lose nothing for the lack of instrumentation. I didnt even miss David Linley! Magic.
Stunning! September 10, 2008 What a pleasure to hear these songs again in an acoustic setting. It is a long time since I went to any kind of live concert but I saw JB several decades ago when he toured with David Lindley and showcased a number of these songs for the first time. And, boy, do they stand the test of time. Fouintain of Sorrow, These Days, Take it Easy, Your Bright Baby Blues and the crowning achievement of his songwriting craft, The Pretender, all come across with a new energy in this acoustic live setting. Brilliant songs, outstanding playing (I knew he was a good pianist and acoustic guitarist, but I never knew he was this good, and his slide guitar work of Bright Baby Blues is amazing), funny interludes with the audience.
And the greatest pleasure for me? - playing it for my 17 year old son (who's into Eminem and The Kooks and so on, and having him turn to me and say "Wow, what great songs!"
I think Jackson Browne is probably my all time favourite songwriter - maybe he'll even produce a third volume of these recordings, better still a DVD of them. Outstanding and a must have addition to your collection
Superb! March 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This live acoustic set beautifully showcases some of Jackson Browne's very best material, and is complemented by truly outstanding production. It's a long time since I enjoyed a new album this much, and it's an absolute 'must' for any admirer of JB.
It's a justifiable simplification to say that JB's first five albums are the best known, and seven of the twelve songs on this album originate from those albums. These new live versions are beautiful, and give a refreshing new take on classics such as 'For a Dancer' and 'These Days'. Other tracks - such as the beautiful 'The Birds of St Marks' - are less well known, but are invariably excellent. Tracks like 'For Everyman' were first recorded more than thirty years ago, but sound just as good (or perhaps even better; certainly different) here. JB's vocals are just as good as ever.
This is a beautiful live set which any admirer of Jackson Browne's work will enjoy again and again.
PERFECT PRECIS. October 31, 2007 HAVE BEEN A DEVOTED FAN FOR YEARS, THIS SUMS UP TO ME THE DEFINITIVE ESSENCE OF HIS MUSICAL STYLE AND APPROACH. BEAUTIFULLY SUNG, LOVINGLY EXECUTED, THE FEEL HE HAS FOR HIS ART AND FOR HIS FANS CLEARLY SHINES THROUGH. I BELIEVE THAT HE IS PERHAPS THE MOST UNDERRATED MUSICIAN OF HIS TIME. THIS COLLECTION COVERS THE ENTIRE REPERTOIRE FROM HIS TEENS TO THE PRESENT DAY. EVERY SONG IS EXCEPTIONAL. I JUST HOPE THERE IS A VOLUME TWO
Jackson Brown in concert in the living room August 27, 2007 This is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. I've been to several JB concerts including his solo acoustic tour in 2005 and can guarantee that this is just like the concert. Jackson doesn't need backing musicians to sound good he can, and does, really deliver live and alone.
Some of the intros might pale with time but the music is near flawless. If you like JB then this album is a must. The atmsophere of a concert is well captured and the music quality excellent. The choice of material is virtually a greatest hits album and nothing to complain about there. If only it was a double album it might contain even more gems ... call me greedy but this could easily have run to 2 discs with the wealth of superb material that this man has produced over the years and still been a great album.
