Five Stars and Then Some! October 7, 2008
This is a wonderful album with lots of different influences at work. It is interesting in a musical sense and rewards concentrated listening as one constantly discovers new solos and musical phrases and passages to appreciate. It is full of contrasting musical colours and textures. Whilst remaining true to rhythm'n'blues-based rock traditions it brings to bear so many other musical idioms. There is an underlying feel of laid back funk and latin percussion but this is integrated with some wonderful soul-jazz grooves ala Jimmy Smith and Grant Green and some latin jazz reminiscent of Herbie Mann. One track - 'Secrets' - reflects the same jazz-inflected grooves inhabited by post-Gaucho Steely Dan. I think I can also feel the vibe and rhythms evident on some of the Ethiopiques series of albums. Some of the sax playing reminds me of Jan Garbarek. All in all the musicanship is outstanding, as are the arrangements and production - at time subtle and understated at other times insistent and demanding of your attention without being over-bearing. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes their music to be about strong rhythms and real musical craft.
