| Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece October 11, 2008 Bought on the strength of the single "My Lover's on the Pier", which is still probably the album's standout, but I cannot identify a duff track amongst the 13 on offer. Syd Matters is a Frenchman, whose pseudonym is a reference to Syd Barrett, and there are certainly occasional touches of musical and lyrical similarity to something the late pioneer might have come up with. However, Barrett has unfortunately also become synonymous with an erratic, substance-impaired approach to most of his tragically limited output. In contrast, this album could not be more painstakingly and beautifully constructed. Predominantly acoustic, the songs weave perfect melodic and harmonic structures which build throughout and are interspersed with mysterious and imaginative use of both rhythms and instrumentation. It is by no means a rocker, but that cannot detract from its totally captivating power. I have not been so totally addicted to an album since Wilco's "A Ghost is Born" and there is a lot here that will appeal to fans of both Wilco and Andrew Bird. There is also a little bit of the more contemplative Floyd and Radiohead about it too.
