Line-dancing, Dolly Parton and reactionary attitudes July 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent primer into the career of a country artist whose limited sales invite the description of 'cult artist'. The reason for that status/ categorisation can be heard on bleak, beguiling songs like 'Kathleen' and 'Waiting Around To Die' where Townes Van Zandt's mournful lyrics, sad, sonorous vocals and sparse musical accompaniment sound like a painful, plaintive cry from the heart. Legend: the Best Of Townes Van Zandt is a poignant reminder that country music is much more than line dancing, Dolly Parton and reactionary attitudes.
Not half! June 20, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you've got this far then buy it; you wont be sorry. He's the real deal. His songs are so good you'll end up listening to the same one over and over then find the next one is just as good.

The title of my review is an often over-used word, but is perfectly applicable in this case. Townes' songs suck you in and involve you in the way only the best can- It is pure poetry in places. Unlike so much music, this is not background music- I defy you to read a paper or a book while he does his stuff- you will be captivated.. Just buy it, and then move on and buy some of his live stuff.
