a good consistent album November 13, 2008 This should keep a lot of Matthews fans pleased! An album full of rockers and harmony lead songs all akin to the 'Blue Sky on Mars' '100% fun' period.
its not as poppy or smooth as 'Blue Sky...' and not quite as gnarly as 100% - but overall it plays well all the way through. i'd say at least every 3 songs i found myself humming and nodding away in my car - always a good sign!!!
I have not got used to it fully, but it has had a few good listens and is a return to form for Mr Sweet.
if your quite new to his work - this would be a good starting place - songs are not as strong and identifiable as 'Girlfriend' - but still memorable. - a bit poppy - but better than the throwaway 'Blue Sky...', - less raw but more melodic than '100%' - more consistent than 'Altered Beast' - truer to his usual style than the over-produced 'Living things' - Rockier than 'In Reverse'.
Definately one to check out for fans and newbies alike.
Fantastic Power Pop! October 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If your sick of all the manufactured rubbish about today and you enjoy an artist who writes good honest tunes that can either have you tapping your feet or listening intently to the lyrics then you could do worse than give Matthew Sweet a listen. On this wonderful record you have some great rocking tunes, Room to Rock,Flying and Lets Love which sounds like The Who and the more ballad type that he does so well like Byrdgirl,Feel Fear and Back Of My Mind, the said Byrdgirl is for me the highlight of the album with it`s wonderful chorus it really sounds like a Brian Wilson song which is no bad thing. This really is a good record and it`s a shame that Matthew isn`t a big star in the UK as all of his records have something to interest you.
SWEET AS EVER September 11, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
VETERAN POWER POPPER MATTHEW SWEET IS BACK WITH ANOTHER COLLECTION OF MELODIC SONGS. I THINK IT IS MOST SIMILAR TO BLUE SKY ON MARS. BYRDGIRL IS ACHINGLY WISTFUL & MELODIC, AS IS FEEL FEAR & DAISYCHAIN. ROOM TO ROCK IS MORE ROCKY, ALONG WITH LET'S LOVE. LONG TERM FANS CAN BUY WITH CONFIDENCE, NEWCOMERS TO PLANET SWEET SHOULD THROW AWAY THEIR BLUNT/MORRISON/RICE CD'S & FIND OUT WHAT A PROPER SINGER SONGWRITER SOUNDS LIKE.
